De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes

As promised, and thanks to Laura N for the sample of De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes, here is a true "quick-and-dirty" comparison of SH and Year of the Dragon. No color correction or anything, paper is Staples bagasse. My thoughts after the image...

Ok, differences? Well, I can't honestly say I got the exact same amount of ink on the nibs in the dips. Especially the last nib, a medium point, my dip in SH seemed wetter. But all that said, it might be seen that SH is a little darker, and a little less likely to shade than YotD. Honestly, in full light (looking at it myself) I'm not sure I can say if they are the same ink, but with variety from batch to batch (which we've seen a LOT of), or if they are subtly differing formulas. I think either ink would be a good choice in this area of blues. I would welcome anyone who has the abilities and equipment to do a more thorough and exacting test to, well, knock themselves out! :)

Thanks, Laura, HTH!

Boy, they sure look similar to me. I agree that the Sherlock looks a little darker, but also that it could just be batch variation. In the squiggles with the first and second nib, they look identical.

This is now one of my favorite inks! A wonderful Christmas present to say the least.

On my cheapest paper, I have had some issues with feathering. However, I have been pleased with how quickly it can dry on decent paper.

You might want to check out Rolf at www.missing-pen.de, although he is now -- AFAIK -- in the process of folding. But he used to have tons of inks, especially those coming from DeA.

Well, let's hope he lets others sell the Diamine Racing Green should his origami come to a final crease.

The ink is listed on the De Atramentis website [www.de-atramentis.com]. Look under "Topics Inks", then under "Literature", then go to the link for "Novels-Thrillers".

I don't know if you can order directly from them, but if not they can probably give you a list of dealers that still carry it.

Here is a quick review of De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes, which is called Night Blue. It's a very nice dark blue, fairly wet and with some nice shading. I really like it

I'm not entirely happy with the scan. The inks are all slightly more vibrant and darker than they appear here. I'm not sure how well the comparisons will come out on the scan, but Sherlock Holmes hits the sweet spot right between Diamine Midnight, which is perhaps slightly more blue, but has less shading, and Lamy Blue Black, which is slightly grayer and has more shading.

It is not waterproof in comparison to the iron gall inks Rohrer & Klingner Salix or Lamy Blue Black, but the writing remained legible after being soaked with water and rubbed.

This looks like a good blue. Is it darker that DA's Steel Blue? It looks like it might be, but I can't tell.
