Seeking Quality Legal Writing Pad...

I am looking for a high quality ruled legal writing pad. This will be for a fountain pen. I have tried gold fibre but the ink bleeds a bit on that. Also looking for some heavier paper. Looking for recommendations

Thanks

If you want a quality writing pad but don't absolutely need a "legal" size, then I would recommend the Rhodia products. The lined No. 18 is A4 sized (8.25" x 11.75") and is a very smooth paper that takes most inks very well. With very wet inks or wet writing pens, it can sometimes take a while to dry. I've never had an issue with feathering with Rhodia. The No. 19 sized products are larger at 8.25" x 12.5" but only come in a dotpad variety rather than lined.

There are lots of other choices as well as sources. I've had great experiences purchasing from the Goulets at gouletpens.com. Here are some links for their Rhodia products. They also offer Clairfontaine papers but I don't have much personal experience with those pads.

Good luck.

Rhodia No. 18 (A4), lined, orange cover, microperforated, 80g paper:

Rhodia No. 18 (A4), lined, black cover, microperforated, 3-hole punched, 80g paper:

Rhodia No. 19 (8.25" x 15.5"), dotpad, black cover, microperforated, 80g paper:

Here is one that is litigation ruled.

The paper is 24lb and DOES NOT allow any bleed through.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

And, I do like Doane Paper. I recently tested it out and even soaked it with water. It held up nicely.

I use "Docket Gold" by a company called "Tops" which I get in my local OfficeMax. It's 20lb bond paper and doesn't feather.

Docket Gold by TOPS is available at Office Depot. One format is particularly FP friendly. It has graph boxes on the front and lined paper on the underside. You have whatever you need. Its cardboard cover is pre-crimped to fold back neatly. It's feels nearly as nice as Rhodia but is a MUCH better value.

 Looking for the perfect nib, perfect paper and perfect ink.

Is it really that great of a value?

$16 for 100 sheets

Rhodia is usually $9 for 80

The item I wrote about is not currently on line. It is:

Item 507617, TOPS Docket Gold Premium Writing

It's $6 for 70 sheets (equivalent to $6.80 for 80). The Rhodia I would use is $11.00 for 80 sheets. Where do I get 80 sheets for nine dollars? I would prefer that!

Quite honestly, the perception of getting it at Office Depot made it seem cheaper. I think now that you made me make the calculations, it's not quite the bargain I thought! Thanks.

I like the Ampad "dual evidence" legal pad, closely followed by Tops "docket gold." I have both versions on my desk right now with each full of FP written annotations.

So many hobbies, so little time....

It's difficult to compare TOPS and Rhodia. I have their cheap small writing pads and they are good for the price: no significant feathering, reasonable show through. Dropping the price factor they are okay. TOPS Stinger on the other hand approaches the same price range as Rhodia and at most so-so: no feathering but is prone to bleeding. So, the paper at least is different across TOPS products and they should be judged on the case by case basis.

You can get the Rhodia 8 1/2 by 11" 80 page pads from Dick Blick for $7.19 a pad, or with quantity discounts, you can get them for $6.41 if you buy 9 of them or as low as $6.11 if you buy 17 of them (with free shipping on the latter). Overall best deal I could find. These are nice pads, I like the 3 hole punched ones.

Thanks for heads up! I've remembered that I've seen them somewhere for about the same price as in European stores but couldn't find them checking the usual suspects. It shows I didn't shop at dickblick for a while.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
