Platinum Izumo Aka Tamenuri Urushi

Pen2009

Recommended Posts

The Platinum Izumo Aka Tamenuri has joined my pen stable and from the presentation to the writing performance is top notch. Platinum also makes this pen in other color: Sora tame (clear) and Kuro tame (Black). Mine is Aka tame (Red).

The pen came in an attractive box, which presents the pen appropriately. The cloth pen case is a nice touch to make this pen special.

The pen's finish is very smooth and there is something different from my other resin pens' surface. The body is made of ebonite, which is lacquered with urushi (aka tamenuri urushi to be more precise). The pictures were taken with the flash on. So, the pen looks very red. But, actual pen does not look that red; the red is more subtle.

I only dip tested the pen; but, I can tell the nib is very smooth and it is F. I was actually expecting some tooth because Platinum's F is very fine compared to other companys' F. This is a nice surprise and I am very pleased with this nib. The nib is marked with "president."

I have been hooked to Platinum pens now as I find they make great pens. I don't know why I have not got their pens much earlier. I now have the celluloid, briarwood, makie and ebonite urushi finish.

Thanks for the review, This pen is very high on my 'to buy' list, I have narrowly missed some auctions.

Can this pen be posted? what is teh purpose of the roll of paper included with the pen?

Thanks!

Hari

Nice review and great pen - I love the shape of those, the gentle curves and taperings together with the colour variations of the lacquer.

@Marcus: This is something which you would need to try for yourself, I at least am not bothered by them but rather appreciate the additional grip they provide.

I'm bothered by the metal screw threads at the section - I wonder how much of a problem they cause when writing.

+1. I love the look of these pens, but those metal threads look to be placed in just the wrong spot. I'd have to handle one before I would make a purchase.

Pen2009, I'd love to hear your experience regarding the threads. Are they sharp? Do your fingers contact them when you're gripping the pen?

My pen holding fingers rest right above the threads. I usually do not hold the fountain pen close to the edge of the section. So, for me, there is no issue about the threads. I actually like it as I can use it as the blind quide to keep my fingers where they should be, holding the pen properly. This pen is well balanced, unposted. (I don't post pens anyway).

I'd think Kaweco AL-sport when it comes to those threads....

The metal also kind of irritates us when we write... :headsmack:

I will compare this model with the Izumo Tagayasan model. This one is made of ebonite and Tagayasan is made of wood. So, I believe both of them would be interesting pens in their own right.

The design on this pen looks great! The threads look fairly small, so they shouldn't be a problem. I'd love to try one out. Oh, and the color is . . . . lovely!!

The Platinum Izumos are very well-balanced in the hand. I would get one if not for the fact that I already have four Nakayas and that the nibs between Platinum and Nakaya pens are essentially the same.

you must get one, the body shape is unlike any nakaya. there will be no redundancy in your collection because of the Izumo. :)

I have to agree with Hari on this one. The shape makes it a very different writing experience to any of the Nakayas. Mine has not been out of rotation since I got it; the Izumo is a massively under-rated pen and IMO is up there with some of the sacred cows (MB 149, Pelikan M800), and perhaps even surpasses them...

Too many pens; too little writing.

Nice pictures and good review, "Pen2009".

I have the Platinum Izumo Yagumonuri and just love the shape. Have you considered adding this model to your collection of Platinum Izumos? Expensive, but quite a pen! More pictures and comments here:

I love the look of the pen. Great review.

How do you feel about the nibs flexibility? I always have found it to be incredibly smooth but also incredibly hard for an 18c.

I also love the bicolor nib design. It's such a smart looking pen. I also love how the shape of the pen is so ergonomic. It's a pleasure to hold.

My oh my! I have several Nakaya models, and all of the Izumi...with the exception of this one! I do covet this pen!

Guess you can tell that I love these pens, which are Fine point nibs, and find that indeed, they are smoother than one might expect.

May you and those you love, be always blessed with peace and never ending joy.

I had bought some months ago a Tagayasan. Great pen!!

Today I received my Aka Tamenuri. Smaller pen!!!

I checked the Platinum site. It says for both pens that they are 16.5cm capped.

The Aka Tamenuri I received is 15.5cm capped.

I saw a thread showing both pens in comparison. Seems really that Aka Tamenuri is smaller. Has anybody both for comparison? Can someone tell me the size of Izumo Aka Tamenuri?

Still missing the "White Stripe" MYU and black brother MYU with transparent section!

(Has somebody a "Murex" with a working clock?

(Thanks to Steve I found the "Black Stripe Capless" and the "White Stripe Capless")

I remember Hari did a comparison - he said the wooden pens are substantially longer than their urushi brethren...

Too many pens; too little writing.
