Lamy M63 (Capped) Vs M66 (Capless) Rollerball Refills.

Hi guys and girls,

I'm going to America at the end of March and I am a little apprehensive bringing my fountain pens along with me. I have traveled with them before and I've decided that I don't want to bring spare ink with me.

Conveniently this means I've got the perfect opportunity to try a Lamy rollerball pen. The only thing I'm having trouble with is deciding if I should get a capless or capped pen, and thus refill - which in this case is going to be the heart of the pen.

So, ordinary M63 capped refill or should I go for one the capless M66 rollers?

Thanks,

John

I'm more of ballpoint guy given its convenience and un-fussiness, but that doesn't mean the BP refill is better than the RB refill. Also, say you want a Lamy Swift, then you're gonna get a RB refill. Or, get both.

I like the way you think dapv rolleyes.gif but I don't think I can justify both. I'm thinking of going a safari or an al-star. A swift i definitely on the distant horizon though.

I should have made my question clearer in the original post. I'm wondering about how the writing experience compares between the M63 and M66 - regardless of the bodies they come in.

I have no experience with the M63 but I have been using the M66 in a swift for quite a few months now, it is very smooth (even on bad paper) and I highly recommend it.

It really doesn't dry out, I have once left it unused for over a week and it starts right away!

Unless it's an exceptionally bad RB refill, I would thing a RB beats a BP for silky smoothness every time. And, then there's gel. The Parker BP and Gel refills are interchangeable in the pen same body.

While the rollerball will perform similarly to a FP, generally speaking, the RB will be far more costly than a BP because the BP refill will write a much longer distance than BP.

The Lamy Swift is pretty cool, but I cannot attest to it's comfort in the hand while writing. Also, the Lamy RB refill is very generous and thus not easy for me to use as I tend to write small.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
