The Sailor Cross Music Nib

Cartooner

Recommended Posts

Oh man, I just watched this video on YouTube:

This is a fantastic nib! And it is one I know nothing about. Does anyone have any information on this thing? Could it fit the TWSBI Diamond 540?

Another thing I'm confused about is the word "Cross". Is there any relation to the Cross brand of pens? I assume this is a Sailor nib, so I might be completely wrong.

Cheers,

Hi Cartooner,

Check out a bit more information on John Mottishaw's nibs.com site.

"Cross" refers to the style of tipping, no relation to the Cross company.

Text from his page is here:

Naginata Cross MusicDouble layered nib with unique cross point on the tipping. This point is even broader than the Cross Point above. See the range of marks available to the left. This is truly the architect's nib with a very narrow down-stroke and an extra-broad cross-stroke.

To my knowledge, Sailor nibs/ nib units are not sold alone, only on Sailor pens.

Given the beauty and function of the Sailor nibs on which this nib can be found, I can't imaging transplanting the nib to a TWSBI (or any other pen, for that matter- no ill will toward TWSBI) but to each his own.

Best Regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Thanks Greg,

That helps explain things quite a bit. I have a Sailor Professional Gear, 24k medium nib. The flow is amazing. The quality and craft is very impressive. I will need to save up for the Cross Music nib - my funds are empty. haha

Cheers, and thanks again for the information.

Also note that Sailor is very particular about the type of pen they'll allow you to put specialty nibs on. For a cross music, you'll likely have to buy another Pro Gear or a full size 1911. Given the importance of flow for a nib this broad, I don't know how successful it would be on a TWSBI without a whole lot of fiddling, but the ink capacity would certainly be an advantage. If you do attempt it (not saying that you should) let us know how it goes.

Thanks Mori,

I don't think I'll try it. I'm not unhappy with the Pro Gear pen and I feel there is a lot of risk; don't want to ruin such a nice nib.

24k ? Are you sure?

No way man! Any nib that soft won't write LOL.

Sailor nibs are 21K which is .875 gold.

The closes is probably Visconti's 23K Palladium...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
