Why Use Water Proof Ink?

I use waterproof ink because I am a clutz.

I can give you a bunch more reasons, but the reasons can all be tied to a lack of coordination.

Yes, I live in the desert, which means that I always carry a drink - and extra water in the car. Hence, more opportunities for me to spill.

And my family is the "tree business" which means that we are out in the sun, and I often daydream and doodle while watering trees. (Yes, more chances for water and dirt to meet paper.)

So, why do you use (or not use) waterproof ink?

And, here is my poem about the wonders of Noodler's Ink.

Ode to Noodler's Ink

Nathan has ruined me

...but in a good way.

I am an addict; I need color.

Deep saturated color.

Colors like Nevada.

Virile, Vibrant. Visceral.

Nathan has ruined me

...but in a good way.

Noodler's Enables me.

I can have my color fix.

I can doodle in the desert.

I can drink and draw.

I am happy.

Nathan has ruined me

...but in a good way.

Then, I cheat.

I am lured by

A Pretty Bottle

A New Color

Lost in my musings,

I spill my tea.

All my witty prose is wiped away and

I am left with marbled mutters.

Remorseful, I remember my beloved Nathan.

I race to the office, and

I dump the offending charlatan.

I fill up my pen with Noodler's.

Nathan has ruined me

...but in a good way.

Having missed the stunning sunset,

I await the Blue-Hour.

Gold streaks and then blends,

I feverishly scribble.

I spill my tea.

I swear, then, I smile.

My papers are wet,

my thoughts dry, and

my ink is bullet proof.

My writings withstand my drinking.

I vow not to cheat on Nathan again.

I love my Noodler's Ink.

All my life I have had jobs that lent me the opportunity to get soaked to the core... Aquariums took their toll on my cheap watches, the army just loved dropping me in any puddle they could find, anywhere... Washing this and that, Now I find that I'm still getting soaked while I clean the heavy butchery equipment and that requires a fire hose... Yup catch that angle just rught and you take one heck of a bath before you know it...

So I have a real need for my notes to not just wash away when I take a shower with all my gear on.

While I do have mostly Noodler's inks I have found a few more that resist washing away. While I doubt they are bullet proof like noodlers these other inks do resist water, and so far thats good enough for me.

Good question! I don't use waterproof inks because I don't need them. Okay, A. if I like the heck out of the colour and wetness etc, I'll use it. B. No offence meant, but if I'm afraid it'll get washed out in a puddle -- or more likely in the rain -- I carry around something written with a laser printer insead, or a note written with a FP stays in my pocket until I get back indoors.

Waterproof does not necessarily equal instantly staining (which some non-waterproof inks are).

For me waterproof is the way to go, I need the ink to remain on the page after drying (writing and sketches) and not smear due to a number of reasons (like moisture in hands due to perspiration etc.). Iron gall is good with the old MB BB as my go to ink.

I once almost ruined a nearly finished sketch due to a careless swipe of a hand (moisture in my hands was enough to smear the black Parker Quink I had used). After painstakingly rescuing it I decided that ok, no more non-waterproof inks for me, thanks. Also, if I intend to use water colours on a sketch I do not want it to smear either.

I AVOID waterproof inks because I am a klutz.

Also for the most part don't see the need for them.

Isopropol alcohol, acetone, laundry bleach, beer, trout fishing, and of course,

rain. I can place a note under a car windshield wiper with confidence, following

a collision. And, then there is bad luck.

Working in a lab, the permanence of our records is of paramount importance. We take precautions to ensure the integrity of our data, including doubly redundant backups on all digital records, tamper-evident notebooks, and archival-grade inks. Hence, we make sure that all our inks are waterproof. It may never be needed, but as a matter of form it is necessary (and speaking from personal experience, it is remarkable what will happen to notes when an RCA cleaning procedure goes wrong - never seen words disappear so quickly).

Dyspraxia: I hate to redo my note because of water spill or because of rain.

I can reverse the question: why not use waterproof ink when you can? I mean, if you give me the choice between two similar ink. I will take the waterproof version.

Given the same choice I would choose the exact opposite. Always preferring washable inks if given a choice.

What happens if you pour waterproof ink down the drain? :hmm1: Is it like trying to solve the square root of -1 ?

Well, if it's Noodler's waterproof ink, it's water soluble, just like non waterproof ink.

a friend of mine sketches, then inks the outline with waterproof inks. after that, they apply watercolors. hence the need for something waterpoof.

I used because I was stuck in the rain one day and a few drops of rain got into my journal making a few pages almost unreadable. :crybaby:

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Sounds much more comfortable than those bulky vests. notworthy1.gif

I work on or restore vintage wooden Chris Crafts, so I'm on or near the water. Spray, random droplets of this and that on notes, sketches, etc. makes me use waterproof. PLUS I enjoy my vintage Skrip Blue Black and the womderful way it behaves

Condensation rings from glasses placed on the notes. Spills from the glasses placed on the notes. Sweat from the exertion to make the notes. Spills and sprays of any number of chemicals that shouldn't happen, but do. Excess suntan lotion on a forearm. ... The list is probably endless.
