Has Anyone Encountered Waterman Intense Black?

It seems to do what it says on the bottle ..... very black, and with no feathering or bleed-though on the limited number of papers on which I have tried it.

Being Watermans, I'd expect it to be quite 'well-behaved', regarding clogging etc..... I'll let you know!

This is just the old Waterman Black with a new lable and name. Marketing Depts. have to earn their pay.

Yep, it should just be the same stuff, according to Waterman.

That may well be so, but it was on the shelf in John Lewis (large UK department store) next to bottles just labelled 'Waterman Black' ..... of course the latter may have been NOS!

It is certainly sufficiently 'intense' for my use, in the wet pens which I favour.

(But I don't really understand this on-going quest for the 'blackest black', anyway .... as Los Bravos sang, in 1966, "Black is Black" )

Waterman Intense Black

Isn't this a oxymoron ?

A person at Catechism classes was using it today and to my dismay it seemed a monoline jet black. I just love how elegantly the classic Waterman Black shades. If it has changed, it will be missed by many.

I didn't like it at first, but Parker Quink Black (the same as Waterman Black, IIRC) really grew on me. I like a black that actually has some capability to shade. I don't want something that's so black that you can't notice any shading at all.

The quest for the blackest black continues because some people are obsessed.

So, from the two grumbles about its lack of shading, it seem that it is not simply a re-labelling job.

That supports my observation.... although it is many decades since I've used Classic Black Waterman!

I am quite happy to have non-shading black inks, as I prefer shading in lighter, brighter colours. Shaded black just looks watery to me ... each to his own :)

Thanks for the replies.

I've never understood the quest for a fountain pen ink that emulates inkjet printer ink. I'm surrounded by laser and inkjet printers everywhere I go.

Your produce alone was worth the trip...

It's different? I thought reps said all formulations were the same?

And reps always give accurate info?

Fountain pens have desirable qualities, over BPs and RBs, other than shading!(light pressure and line width variation are more important to me)

No, I believe they could make mistakes. I was just fishing to see if there was any more evidence to support/weaken the suggestion.

I've been meaning to get a new bottle of WM black ever since this thread went live, but my local town centre doesn't even have cartridges, never mind bottles! I'll stretch further afield later in the week...

I got mine at John Lewis in Milton Keynes... I was hoping to find some Skrip Red but had no luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bottle of Intense Black arrived today, and while I don't have an old bottle to compare it to (the only other black I currently have is Diamine Quartz Black) I believe the distributors in that it's the same stuff.

I believe that the waterman intense black to be a fantastic set of ink,I just finished a bottle ( I do a lot of writing ;) ) and I've already bought another one. They don't bleed, perfect saturation, and they have beautiful shades.Sometimes I just take some time after writing to admire my own writing :P I mean who doesn't? Haha

The pen is mightier than a sword
