How long will the ink last?

  1. 1. Will a Noodler's Piston full of ink last a day of writing?

    • Yes
    • No
    • Keep a bottle just in case
    • You had better invest in a Camelbak for all the ink you will be using

As I await my Noodler's Piston I am beginning to contemplate the obvious question: Will a single draw of ink last through a day of school? I greatly dispise running out of ink in the middle of the school day, but at the same time I don't see it being practical to carry around a bottle of ink! However if needed I could I suppose get a bottle to leave in one of my teacher's classroom... But that is an "only if required" type thing....

This is a non-flex so the output should be consistent.

I'd say this is a nearly impossible question to answer, as it depends on too many variables: How many pages of notes you take each day, how free-flowing the ink you're using is, the size of your nib, etc. Probably it'd last all day if filled fully, but I'd recommend having back-up pens -- a cheap fountain pen, a disposable one, an inexpensive rollerball or the like -- with you, just in case.

I always have my Waterman (with a very wet medium nib) filled with Noodlers Bulletproof Black, and keep the bottle in my bag. I can use the converter in a single day of heavy notes or a single problem set if I have to go through many pages. My other pen is filled and brought with me, but I do not bring any extra ink for it, If it runs out during the day its time for my Waterman again (if I am not already using it). I have ran out of ink during the day and simply filled up quickly during the class; make sure to have paper towel or a facial tissue of some sort with you as well! If I do not want to do this, or if I am in a situation where I do not have the time (IE an exam) I have a disposable Bic Fountain Pen in my bag was well, along with a Pilot G2 .7mm and .5mm. Those are actually kept for when people want to borrow a pen, and are not feeling brave enough to try the disposable Bic. I also have a pencil with me for those instances where a scantron sheet has to be filled out.

This works for me and I hope it helps,

To answer the questions:

Nib:Med/Fine

Ink: Manuscript Blue

Pages: <5 on MOST days. Granted I have been known to write 10page essays!(my teachers love it... especially when they spend half their weekend grading my paper alone!)

I went along with keeping a bottle just in case. I tend to use converter-filled pens in grad school classes I'm taking now, and each fill lasts well over a week. I have other pens with me, cuz I don't see asking the professor to hold their thoughts while I pull out my ink bottle, dip the nib, and draw in the ink.

That would be kinda cool, though...

When I was in grad school I always carried a four pen case and had three pens and one pencil. I didn't always ink up every day, and one day remember going through all three pens (one always had red ink for grading my professors papers) and went on to the pencil. A couple more pens in a small pen case is way easier than bringing a bottle of ink to class.

cheers!

One simple answer is to buy a disposable Pilot V-Pen (or Varsity, but that has a broader nib). Carry it with you, and on the off chance that you forget to fill your pen one morning, or just can't keep that 30-page essay inside you any longer, when the piston-filler runs dry you can just uncap the Pilot and go on. In my experience V-pens/Varsities always start on the first stroke, never dry out, and you can look through the barrel to see how much ink you have left. They are very inexpensive, and if you want to you can refill them, making them even less expensive. The only problem is that you may find the Pilot to be a much better writer than your main pen.

I think you are safe. I used my Parker 45 all day every day for about six years. I would fill it every morning with Sheaffer washable black (#62). I carried a ballpoint just in case, but don't remember needing it. No, we did not change inks forty or fifty years ago. You chose Sheaffer or Parker ink, blue, black, or blue-black, and stuck with the same ink for years. A piston-filler ought to have as much ink as the old Parker converter, which held about as much ink as a Parker cartridge.

A fill would most likely last you a day at that rate. You don't necessarily have to carry an entire bottle of ink. These work quite well for me. You might want to make a small stand, however, as they're narrow and somewhat easy to tip over.

You could also get a backup fountain pen as earlier suggested. Platinum Preppys work well if you're on a tight budget - I actually prefer mine to the Noodler's piston pen. Easily turned into eyedroppers for very large ink capacity.
