Schrade Tactical Fountain Pen

I have one of these, it writes quite well. I gave it to my daughter.

I got a bit fed up of the rather dry and rigid nib in my Schrade Tactical, and decided it needed a gold replacement. That may sound a bit extravagant in a fairly modestly-priced pen, but I think it's been worth it. The very helpful people at FPnibs.com in southern Spain sold me a ruthenium-plated gold JoWo nib with a matched feed, and it was fairly straightforward to insert these into the original screw-in unit. The dark ruthenium finish has just the right 'stealth' look for this pen, I think, and it writes very nicely indeed now; much smoother, and with a bit of gentle line variation too. There's a hand-written review of my handiwork on my blog if you want to see how it writes (usual caveat - I'm still mastering the thing!). Drilling-out the barrel has allowed me to fit a longer international cartridge so that it doesn't run out of juice quite so quickly, too! Here's how the nib looks these days:

That is so cool! Which JoWo nib did you use (link perhaps?) Can you measure the feed diameter? That would help. I expect the feed diameter will be either 5mm or 6mm. This would lead us to assume the replacement nib is termed a "Modern" #5 o r #6 respectively.

any pen has 'tactical' use if you know how to utilize it properly.

I did not read every post, so someone may have addressed this already. Kubotan are illegal to carry in some states, so even if you just think it is "cool" and have no intention of using it, best to check out your state, county and municipality laws.

You can't reeeaaaallly call it tactical if you have to unscrew the cap. I mean if you are holding back your attacker with one hand while they are trying to choke you and reaching out to get the pen off your desk with your free hand intending to pop the cap off and slam the nib into the attackers throat it's not going to work if you need both hands or your mouth to hold the cap as you unscrew it. You need to pop the cap off quickly with one hand and slam that pen home in one fell swoop. Ok so I've seen the Bourne movies to many times but that bic pen Jason used worked like a champ!

It doesn't come with a converter but it will accept the monte verde mini converter. This is a great pen, at less than thirty dollars. The nib on every shcrade I have bought had a smooth writing nib, straight from the box. It also has an adapter, so it can be converted over to a roller ball. And yes, it comes with a rollerball refill.

Gee, I'm surprised how inexpensive this pen is - less than $20 on Amazon with low-cost or even free U.S. shipping. Today I went to the Straits Pen site in Singapore who carries them and saw these fountain pens go for double the price or the equivalent of $40 USD plus tax and shipping - ouch. Also, Straits Pen doesn't carry the mini-converter that fits this pen. I was surprised the Schrade pen was so expensive at Straits Pen, everything else they sell is quite reasonable. Oh well. Maybe on my next Amazon order... David

It's a #6 - and on my Schrade, there was a helpful '6' printed on the bottom of the feed as a clue : ) Here's where I got a replacement. The screw-in holder it came with was not the same as that use in the Schrade, but the new nib and feed were a simple friction-fit swap. It's getting a whole lot more use now!
