Custom 51S In Damascus Stainless Steel

Absolutely stunning. Probably best if I never find out the price, just in case I might be able to afford it if I sold everything else I own.

+ Pi on the price curiosity. Especially with the add on Opal filler rod jewel.

Ralph,

I don't know how you to pull it off but you always seem to outdo yourself with your "next pen."

That is stunning.

Just remember who has supported you in the past when you're ready to sell these.

I know this.

I thought the Thompson pens were the coolest customs I'd ever seen.

Before I saw Ralph's pens anyway.

I always found the 51 one of the most boring pens on earth visually. That has changed with this beaut.

Good Evening Bruce,

Wish I could specifically address the price question of yours - and some others above - but at this point in the experiment just don't have a final figure... the Damascus stainless steel is a a bit more difficult to work with than our titanium and the material is a bit more expensive (and difficult to obtain) so it is fair to say it won't be any less... but how much more - just don't know.

If we make more than the two prototypes the "standard" filler unit will likely be of the "all metal" variety such as shown in the photo below.

The opal filler unit was another experiment - probably in the + $125 area... but not sure if it adds all that much to the pen? - but like everything else it is all about personal preferences.

The original post was sort of a visual beta test - and wish to thank everyone for their comments.

thanks, ralph prather

That is a fascinating piece of pensmithing! Have you considered a damaskeened cap/barrel? I think it would be a blast to have a pen with a damaskeened design similar to one of my vintage pocket watches!

Absolutely stunning! Got to this party late, I think my vote on the ring would be the white metal with blue fill, personally. Is the weight comparable to a Flighter?

That's really beautiful! I've heard of Damascus steel, I guess in relation to knives, mostly. Never seen a pen done in it.

Question (maybe a dumb one...): Does the metal have any tendency to take on any sort of patina with use? Or does it have stainless qualities?

This is not a real "Damascus steel" where different grades of steel are forged together and folder and forged and folder etc.

This is a kind of powdered metal that is mixed and layered and then (I think) sintered into a solid.

And, good question, but no the metal has not oxidized in any way in the 6 months that I've owned it.

You mind us asking how much this ended up costing?

Well I could, but Mr Prather prices each pen based upon how the Buyer special orders it.

The "Blue M3" was more than a hood, barrel and a blind cap.

It also had a hand made Prather filler, an M3 filler pump rod and two jewels, a smooth silver cap, and "reverse trim" (i.e. silver blind cap jewel surround).

He also fit and functioned the nib to my specifications.

I prefer Mr. Prather to price his own pens.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
