The VPs are not stealth. They will draw ridicule. It would raise some doubts as well.

You are kidding right.... I have never been ridiculed for using any of my VPs or for that matter my Parker 51s either....

And just what doubts would a VP raise...

yeah...and who's going to ridicule an ex Navy Seal? You could wear a tutu and mascara and I doubt anyone would snicker in your presence.http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/scared/scared0016.gif

I dare anyone to ridicule my Fujisan Maplewood pen 7inches {175mm} long capped, 1/2inch {12.5mm} diameter, and 7/8inch {22mm} nib. I always carry it in a miniature Samurai scabbard. People usually cringe away from me whenever I have to sign my name. HAH!

I tell you my dear Lloyd, Bank tellers look like your Avatar when i cash a check, it does no good being timid, one must command respect with a fountain pen. So come on fellow FPN members let us show the world we carry our pens with pride.

Theodore Roosevelt.... NOT Franklin Roosevelt....

It was actually "Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick"

They say the best way to hide something is to put it where everyone can see it.

If they ever design a plastic with chameleon-like qualities and use it to make fountain pens, you should buy one.

Geez...I NEED to catch up on sleep. Thanks for the correction.

I regularly carry a Lamy 2000, a black and gold VP, and various Cross Centuries. Occasionally the Cross pens get noticed with a comment along the lines of "nice pen" because people in the U.S. often recognize the brand. People ask to borrow my VP because they think it is BP. No one ever says anything about my Lamy 2000 so it gets my vote as my steathiest.

I think any of the suggestions mentioned above would be fine. The Pilot VP, the 45, and the 51 are three of my favorite pens. Here is another option, however. You could use either Pilot Varsity or Bic disposable fountain pens. They clearly have an FP nib, but in other respects are very similar looking to any number of disposable gel or rollerball pens with grey or black plastic bodies and removable caps. And even if someone did notice that you were using a FP, it would not look at all "showy" if that is your concern.

Pilot Varsity or Bic would be an excellent choice for a utilitarian.

Does the OP subscribe to utilitarianism?

If you're going to do something, do it with style.

Lamy 2000, Montblanc 146, Pelikan M200. Black. Piston filler. End of story. If you use any of those, there is no need to be self-conscious, plus you will demonstrate good taste. If you are still scared, use the 146 unposted and get the old monotone 14k nibs. Elegant and understated trumps stealth.

That all depends on where you work and on the personalities of the people you work with. I know some high level directors who would take this as a direct challenge to their manhood and respond viscerally. Not directly to the pen itself, but by becoming bullying and obstructive.

I absolutely agree. Something like that happened to me. Some people who does not know you, can think you are arrogant in front of your bosses. It's so sad... But that fact will not make me give up from my pens.

Hmm. How about a Sailor Pro Gear or 1911 with Matte Black finish?

There is a new one coming called the "Imperial Black". It's nib and

metal parts are PVD coated and appear titanium. Really beautiful.

You should work for me. I have been trying to start doing business in Brazil. You will be encouraged to do all your work with a fountain pen.

Maybe he was really saying "Speak softly and carry a Bic Stic."

Either use your FP with no fear or don't use it at all. Life is too short for hiding. If you are afraid of bosses, use a disposable bic ballpoint.

the most stealthy pens have already been mentioned - lamy 2000, pilot vanishing point, pilot decimo, pilot fermo, parker 45, hero 100.

i would propose that waterman carene, dupont defi, and montegrappa parola or nero uno are also conspicuous pens. obviously, don't get one with gold or in other bright colors if you want to remain hidden.

i have the same concern as you (the op) about wanting to remain conspicuous. but, really, most people don't know jack about pens or about how much they cost, and i am always surprised at how no one ever pays any attention. i venture to say that if your co-workers all use bics, then don't worry - you can use any of the above and no one will pay any attention. if you sat in a room full of fountain pen users, then you won't be able to remain conspicuous even if you used a bic.

oh, one addition: they are not fountain pens, but the visconti eco-rollerball series allow you to use fountain pen ink and give an acceptable writing experience. they are rollerballs, so are fairly conspicuous while allowing you to use your choice of ink. i find their lines too wide for my liking, though.

I think you mean inconspicuous. thumbup.gif
