Custom Pen From Ken

Hello guys,

First of all I want to clarify that this is not a "classic" review, it is more of an overall impression of the pen.

I contacted Ken somewhere in November asking him some information regerding his custom made pens. I wanted to buy myself a "srecial" present for Christmas and what better than a custom pen. I had told him that I had no intention buying a pen right away but he was happy to help me with my questions.

He showed me a variety of acrylic blank to choose from, without a second thought I chose the cat's eye acrylic. During the making process I asked Ken to take some photos of the turning stages and he did take A LOT of photos. So imagine how impacient I was for the pen to arrive.

The pen arrived on 22 of December, perfect timing  , of course I didn't wait until Cristmas to ink the pen. I inked it with Aurora black and using it for a while I found that the nib had more feedback than I would like that was a problem which was easily solved by the brown bag trick. I would like to point out that ken tunes the nibs of his pens before shipping them and I had'n informed him that I like my nibs somewhat glassy smooth but if I had I am sure that he would heve taken care of it.

The pen is light, due to the nature of acrylic, but extremely well made. I can easily say that its quality rivals the Edison Pearl I used to own and it is better than the Premiere. The acrylic is REALLY beautiful, it has a lot of depth to it and it is slightly translucent in some areas of the pen. Although when I first received the pen it had a weird and unpleasant smell (worse tht noodlers pens) but as I expected the smell through time fainted.

So to sum up, the pen is extrmely comfortable to use, really light and the JoWo steel nid is great. Here are the dimensions of the pen and some photos

Capped: 15 cm

Uncapped: 13.4 cm

Oh, I forgot mention that the pen doesn't post.

:thumbup:Very handsome pens!....if I didn't know it was new, I might have mistaken it for a vintage pen...has a very classic look to it...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
