Pen Storage And Display Ideas

Mr Tutt

Recommended Posts

I am working on several ideas for affordable and marketable pen storage and pen holders that would appeal to pen buffs and collectors. I know what I would like, but would like some input from FPN members on what you would like to see in these sort of items. Concerning storage for example: 1. materials 2. capacity 3. external size 4. price and any other factor you feel is important and useful. What about desktop pen holders to keep the pens in your rotation easy at hand? 1. Material 2. capacity 3. size 4. price 5. utilitarian or more artistic 6. style preferences 7. or any thing else. What's important to you. This is elemental brainstorming, so tell me what you'd like, what you'd settle for, what your sell your grandmother to the Riffs for.

Personally I love the looks of Visconti desk sets, but can't afford one at the moment - the wood is simply stunning. Also Delta used to supply acrylic desktop pen holder with their Dolce Vita OS, and that also looked great - it was made of similar acrylic the pen was made of. For storing pens I'd love something with a glass, so that I can see the pens lying there without opening. Again, Visconti has those nice pen trays, that are stackable and have magnets in them so that they stay nicely aligned.

Personally I prefer simple and elegant (again - see Visconti and Delta).

Capacity - tray for 20 pens is reasonable, but 12 is also fine. I think 20 is better for storing pens on a display, but 12 is nicer as a "on-the-desk" storage

As to size - it should be big (so that it accomodates pen of a size of Dolce Vita, and maybe something a little bit bigger), but not too big. Pens should have some space between them, but not excessive - so that they are not "lost" in the tray.

Price - well, as low as possible ;-) As a rough guide - if the Visconti magnetic tray was 70 USD, I'd surely buy it - for more I'd hesitate, but above 120 (inc. shipping) I'd probably pass on that one. For the desktop tray, I'd pay 100, and really heasitate if it gets higher than 140. At 350 eur I'm not going to buy it any time soon. So this is my influence on the demand curve - and I do hope it will meet the supply curve some time in future ;-)

Cheers,

Adam

Thanks. I'll give a look to your suggestions. It's the sort of input I'm looking for.

see this thread https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/210003-show-me-your-display-cases/

I like the cases from Harbor Freight (should be much cheaper) and Gerstner International GI-532 toolboxes.

Pros:

1. wood

2. storage for inks and Pens, so it's a complete solution.

3. Portable

Room for improvement:

1. doesn't seem to accommodate larger ink bottles (4.5 oz Noodlers e.g.)

I have seen the wooden tool chest from Harbor. It's made in China and I found a manufacturer through Alibaba. I've ask for some interior dimensions but have got no response. Recently I saw an Excel tool chest at Sam's. It's metal, with enough drawers to store a lot of pens. It has a wooden top, but it's very industrial in its look--hey, it's a tool chest. It's about $80. Still, if industrial is your thing, it would be very utilitarian.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
