Montblanc Oyster Grey

Recommended Posts

Folks,

Since there is only one review of MB Oyster Grey, I thought it would be good to add another using a broad nib. This is my first ink review; therefore, I welcome any constructive criticism that you pros may have to offer.

Enjoy!

You're welcome! What pen/nib combination are you planning to use with it?

Mike

I've tried Oyster Grey, and for me it seems to need a very wet nib to put enough ink on the paper to be readable.

When the Poussiere de Lune finally runs out of my Pelikan M200 with an M400 OB nib (how much ink can these things hold?!!) I might try OG, as that's about as wet a nib as I have and I'd like to see the little variation the nib ought to give me.

Awesome nib! Congratulations! You got tons of shading with this lovely pair: good shading ink and a broad italic. I have a 146 with a M nib that I want to do the same as yours: cursive italic among 1.3-1.5mm; I have to contact Mr. "Magic" Minuskin.

+1. Thanks for the shading demo. I've got this in my Pel Polar Lights which although branded as M is really more like F. I think I've been missing an opportunity! I've got an Aurora 88 Big with an italic that will get this today.

Thank you everyone for your comments. As I mentioned, the broad nibs compliment this ink and it looks fantastic on ivory paper.

Greg does great work and he returns your pen in no time flat!

I will be using a Pelikan M200 with an F nib. It looks like that the ink is great with a broader nib, but my Pelikan is the only pen I have at this time. I'm sure I will still be happy with it!

I've also used it in my MB #149 EF and have been very satisfied with the ink.

I got this ink when it was first released and although I really tried to like it the color wasn't for me. Perhaps if I had used a super wet broad nib I would have liked it more. Perhaps I will try the Noodler's Lexington Gray next in my Esterbrook 2968 broad nib because I have most colors except for a nice gray. I think that Montblanc inks are high quality and I have enjoyed using 4 or 5 of them (I even have an unopened bottle of Racing Green stashed away!!!)

Does it come out as a very dark grey if you're using a finer nib? Or is still that light of a shade?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
