Gents,

What should I be looking for to distinguish an old style Pearl and Black fountain to the newer style?

I have been told this pen is Parker item number 97912, but is this stamped on the pen anywhere?

Thanks for your help

based on my knowledge the pearl and black from 80s or early 90s has a nib with the arrow engraved on it and the modern pearl and black duo fold has Aces design on it plus it has same design on the top of the cap but the old one has flat top of the cap with circles. I know its hard to explain the design on the top of the cap but if you look at the nib you can easily identify the old and new. I wish I had pictures taken of mine to show you the new one but I will try to get some pics tomorrow and post the new one here.

I hope this helps..

I have a 2005 series Pearl and black centennial and a 1996 series black and gold centennial. (I also have a black mosaic centennial and a black and platinum International - both 1996 series) The older pearl and black 1992 onwards used a very white pearl colour acrylic but this was discontinued and replaced with a more yellow pearl acrylic (2005 onwards). If the pearl colour is not of great concern I would wholeheartedly recommend the current series over the older series as I found the newer nibs are much smoother and overall better than the older models. You can always change the nibs. In fact my Pearl and Black is a regular in my pen rotation compared to my ohher Parkers. If you are looking for an older model check out Melbourne Vinatge Pens (no affiliation)http://www.vintagepens.com.au/sale_LatepkrDuo.htm as they often have may for sale.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
