Soennecken 222... But What?

Soot

Recommended Posts

I am stumbled over this Soennecken 222(Extra size?) that I received recently.

  1. It has no markings whatsoever on the barrel, nor on the feed.

  2. It does not have the click-fill mechanism inside, but a piston-fill mechanism similar to Pelikan 400s. It looks like friction fit, but I can't be sure.

  3. Seemingly the piston guiding shaft is not inserted deep enough in the barrel, so when knob is fully closed it leaves a 2mm gap between the barrel and the turning knob. Another issue is that when fully extended, the knob screws out along with the brass screw which I think can be corrected once the guiding shaft is positioned at the correct depth.

  4. It has knurl rings on the turning knob, I am not aware of this on other 222s.

  5. Can anyone confirm whether this is an Extra or Superior? The length of the pen is 129mm not including the gap.

Let me know what you guys think. Any input is appreciated.

The bottom pen is the pen in question, the top one is a Soennecken 111 Extra for comparison. They're both aligned to the bottom edge of the barrel where it meets the knob.

Underside of the nib, no markings; flat feeds like the ones used for 111/222 Extras.

Cap comparison.

Nib comparison -- note* the 222 nib is a replacement, not the original 222 nib that it should come with.

Looks like a 222 to me by the pattern and the cap ring and clip. Unusual that the barrel is not imprinted, and I have never seen the knurl on the knob before either. Unscrew the nib, the nib units are engraved with model number and size (at least it should be). I would say the piston mechanism is not working properly. This is all best to my knowledge, there might be others with more expertise.

After some digging around, it seems to me that my Soennecken 222 might instead be a "Soennecken 2" the economic model of the Soennecken 111/222. The economical model doesn't sport a click-fill mechanism, and has knurl rings on the turning knob.

Soennecken 2 in Black

However-- the economic models that I've found are all in black, and not in these colorful celluloid barrels. The other odd thing about this is the lack of markings of any kind. Still unexplained.

Judging from the pics, your 222 is the Extra. The Superior would be clearly smaller than the 111 Extra. I have a 111 and a 222, both in the Superior size, and the 222 is a bit smaller. The Extra 222 measures ca. 13 cm, so that should be yours. I do not have a ruler here, but the 222 Superior measures about 12 cm.

Nib: the original one must have the crown; yours is a Soennecken nib form another model. I could be from a 1306; maybe from several others, I just happen to have a 1306, the nib looks like yours and the size is similar to the nib of the 222 Superior.

Feed: the original one for the Superior 222 has a flat central part and fins that extend only ca. 1 mm from the borders towards the middle. But I do not know about the Extra. I can tell that in the 111 series the feed of the Superior is flat, but the one in the smaller Lady is "semifinned" as described above.

Knurling: could it that be marks from pliers? I read about bitting marks attributed to an user unaware of the function of the click fill mechanism, who tried to force it open just by turning the knob without pulling it first, using pliers.

Lack of imprints in the barrel: I read about a Soennecken pen without marks because some buyers did not like "branding". I read it in some ebay listing some time ago, I've tried to find it, but without success. Cannot tell whether or not it is true.

Lack of imprints in the feed: My two Superiors, 111 and 222, and my 111 Lady do have marks indicating size.

Mechanism: I read there has been an export version of the 111 without the click fill mechanism: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SOENNECKEN-1-EXTRA-EXPORT-FOUNTAIN-PEN-ORIGINAL-BOX-/330601918541

Sorry not to be able to help more

If one day you get tired of your Extra, let me know

Thank you for the info, they're very valuable and helpful! In addition to your info, I think I have figured out some part of the puzzle; possibly a "Soennecken 2" in grey celluloid.

See post above yours. :eureka:

Yeap, seems we posted at the same time. Wow, a Soennecken 2 in lizzard pattern must be veeeery rare, guess you have a jewel, no doubt worth sending to a pro for repair. Congrats.

Wonderful pens!

I have a Soennecken 333 Superior with all the typical markings. It also has a piston filling mechanism by the virtue of it being a lower tier model. I think if your are used to overhauling piston filler with cork seals then it should be a simple DIY.

You can dissemble the piston filler assembly by using precision pliers with jaws which are thin enough to grip the black cylinder once the turning knob is fully extended. I also assumed that it must have a complicated mechanism but when I saw Osman Sumer do it at the Chicago Pen Show I was amazed by its simplicity.

Good luck.

I made a wooden tool by myself to do this job. Also for pens with click mechanism.

That is some ingenuity making that tool. Can you briefly describe how you made it?

By the way I have a long way to go before I make pictures like you do!

These days entry level SLRs have gotten so much better that anyone with some patience can make some neat pictures.

...don't be as modest about your pics - they are as good as mines, just different.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
