Leather Journals

I don't own one, but am anticipating purchasing two; one as a gift.

I planned on keeping some pages, binding some and trashing some eventually. I just was not sure I wanted to spend ~$80 for a disposable journal, but with 250 TO 300 pages, it still may work out because it would take me a year to complete the journal and $80 might not be that much for a year. Currently I use Habana Quo Vadis and they ran me about $17 each for 90 pages and it took 6 months to fill.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this thread: No these are NOT refillable

but I think you make the valid point that it takes a YEAR to fill one. It took me a year to fill mine, and I want to preserve it in that form, intact.

One book a year for about $80 is not bad.

And yes, I have the Habana notebooks and also a small leather COVER made by a RAZOR STROP Company...HEIRLOOM GENTS: it holds 2 (5 1/2inch by 3 1/2inch Clairfontaine webooks that I carry around with me. Handmade for about $25. Excellent quality!

When I finish these small notebooks, I remove them and add 2 more....quick.

I hate cheap leather! I want something that looks nice and that I want to carry around and be proud of. Both the Earthworks and the Heirloom fit the bill.

thanks your response reminded me to follow-up on what I purchased

I am on my second Earthworks Journal, made in England. A handcrafted journal, from handsewn paper to leather cover.

Those are beautiful! And they have a Border Terrier too. Must be good people. :)

I recommend Renaissance Art Leather.

I LOVE Renaissance Art Leather! I have one of their leather journals and I love it! :notworthy1:

I really like the fact that you have several types of paper to choose from.

+1 on the Earthworks Journals - they look great. However I can't seem to get any information on how the refill system on them work?

These journals really look high quality, and are really great looking. From what I guess from the information on the web site the pages within the journal are held there by a cord threaded through the cover. But how the ends of the cord are secured I couldn't tell. Just a simple square-knot? Some kind of a clasp?

To own one would be really nice  , but they are a little out of my reach :crybaby: . I will definitely have to keep them in mind for the future. The only draw back is the European sizing A4, A5 - not that the actual dimensions would be hard to get accustomed to, but my thinking is that obtaining paper would not be as easy here in the US, might be a bit of a problem....couldn't go to the local Staples I don't imagine.

I had the same issues before purchasing. The cord is tied in the back. It is leather and can be untied and retied. The paper for the medium is A5 Size. The A5 in Clairefontaine can be made by folding the A4 size in half. The A4 size can be obtained stateside at a very good price (One source). I'm looking at buying cheap binders and a hold punch as I finish each 300 pages, or buying a bookbinder for about $120.

Any Midori users here and if so what do you like about them and can you share your favorite accessories. I am new to the traveler style.

Thanks,

I currently use two leather Journals. An Earthworks refillable Journal that takes A5 paper and a Midori travelers Journal. Both are great. I have three books in my midori journal: one for sketching, one for personal notes and one for work notes. I have the pen holder, but it is somewhat loose and I have mixed feelings on it. It works fantastic and is relatively compact considering it replaces three separate journals. I purchased another insert for holding small notes and extra rubber bands. Goulet Pen Comany and Amazon had great prices. I am starting to especially like Goulet, great service and products.

The earthworks journal is my main thought, feeling, meditation, spiritual journal. I refill it with a mix of papers. Lately I use Tome River Paper purchased from Etsy. I glued a leather photo envelope into the back of the earthworks journal. I punched another hole at the top to secure a bookmark. I am currently replacing the twine that secures the paper with my own weaved brown and yellow/orange line.

Both journals are great for their functions: one for thoughts the other for daily tasks.

Good luck with your search. I've used a number of journals, right now I like these two best.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
