Leather Journals

I'm looking for a good quality leather journal that has at least 300 pages or more that I can get either in a 5x7 or a 6x9 (the former preferably). I've looked at Epica and a few other brands I can't quite remember, but the only one's that I noticed that had >256 pages was Epica.

Does anyone know of any other brands that offer leather (or leather hardbound) journal over 256 pages for a reasonable price?

Question for you...why 300 pages?

Because that's a 1 inch thick journal (depending on the quality of the paper). I had one once before and it was very comfortable for me to write on it because of how high it sits off the desk and how the pages (again depending on the paper) lay from first page to last. I'm left handed so the inch thickness helps keep me comfortable. Any journal afterwards had significantly less pages, decreasing the thickness, which altered my handwriting (which isn't too flattering in the ones I've used up to now).

This is my avenue!!!

Here is where I have found some

Online store called Grim Art, located in France expect to pay about 150-200 + Ship (picked up my locally)

VERY NICE QUALITY! do not get fooled by the crappy website, call them!

I also have a friend on mine picked up a few straight from Italy... will look up the name of the place. The thing about buying in Italy is that u need to avoid the tourist traps...

Some of the internet leather re seller carry some

Renaissance Art makes some decent leather journal. Ok quality but its cheaper under 100

and this guy

Saddleback Leather makes some KILLER product, more on the pricey side tho...

Hope it helps!

I am still in the quest of finding more and more leather journals, altho I like mine refillable =)

I love my Exacompta "Basics" Journal that has a nice leather cover and takes the great 5 1/2" x 8" journals.

I am on my second Earthworks Journal, made in England. A handcrafted journal, from handsewn paper to leather cover.

Different sizes: I have the 6x9 size. Mine is called the Traveller which can be rolled up and put in a pack.

About $75 shipped, but better than anything else I've seen. I always get compliments on it.

Takes about 4 weeks for them to make it and send it to you....well worth the wait! From now on, I will have a collection of these journals. Looks good on the shelf!

Try: www.earthworksjournals.co.uk

How is the paper in these? FP friendly I assume? Texture? (I read it is slightly textured on their website, just curious as to your opinion as to how textured "slightly" really is!

Thanks, these look good!

Wow these are beautiful. Can you advise me on where to buy replacement paper?

I don't own one, but am anticipating purchasing two; one as a gift.

I planned on keeping some pages, binding some and trashing some eventually. I just was not sure I wanted to spend ~$80 for a disposable journal, but with 250 TO 300 pages, it still may work out because it would take me a year to complete the journal and $80 might not be that much for a year. Currently I use Habana Quo Vadis and they ran me about $17 each for 90 pages and it took 6 months to fill.

Check out pellejournals.com

Our journals are 100% handmade and 192 pages (when all 3 notebooks are used). The notebooks are 28lb super smooth and fountain pen friendly.

Let me know if you have any questions.

If you do not find what you want you can check out our website and if you do not find on there what you want then we can make it for you. Recommend getting paper samples first so you can pick your favorite paper.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this thread: No these are NOT refillable

but I think you make the valid point that it takes a YEAR to fill one. It took me a year to fill mine, and I want to preserve it in that form, intact.

One book a year for about $80 is not bad.

And yes, I have the Habana notebooks and also a small leather COVER made by a RAZOR STROP Company...HEIRLOOM GENTS: it holds 2 (5 1/2inch by 3 1/2inch Clairfontaine webooks that I carry around with me. Handmade for about $25. Excellent quality!

When I finish these small notebooks, I remove them and add 2 more....quick.

I hate cheap leather! I want something that looks nice and that I want to carry around and be proud of. Both the Earthworks and the Heirloom fit the bill.

I've been using the medium carved tai chi journal (earthworks)from earthworks for the last month and an oberon designs moleskin cover (oberon). They are both very good journal cover/holders but very different in key ways; the tai chi, is simple and holds paper that has been punched, A5 size; no pockets or bookmarks, looks aged and does not lay flat. It reminds me of what a monk might have simple and beautiful. The oberon Triskellion Knot design is elegant with a journal pocket and another pocket formed by the journal and cover. It has a bookmark in the journal itself. It lays flat and has lined paper.

I use my simple Tai Chi journal for prayers, meditation writing, and for notes from spiritual books. I use the oberon for art info, club info (local clubs and organizations I work with), plans (house, work, money, etc), daily ideas and sometimes personal writings. This is working out. I was not sure how I would use both of them at first, but I like the separation and the difference in designs, but sometime writing in the Tia Chi journal is more difficult since the pages don't lay flat. It is not for someone that wants all the bells and whistles, but is my favorite. It forces me to slow down when I write, and invokes feelings of simplicity and effort, not the convenience and ease associated with having everything, but the ease of an uncluttered moment.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
