The Lawyer Pen

Postscript

Recommended Posts

Anyone have one? As a new convert to Conway Stewart I am thinking of getting one for my son who graduates from law school next spring. Your thoughts? He is not a current fountain pen user but easily could be. Thanks,

Please make that Lawyer thanks. Sorry for the typo.

As far as I know you can change the Title (through the EDIT button under your post)

I have the doctors pen, which was based on the Nelson pen. As all CS pens a good writer.

I have not seen the Lawyer engravings in detail. But to the casual observer it is just a black fountainpen, and upclose it is refined.

Thanks for the tip; just figured it out. As for the subtlety, that is exactly what would appeal to my son. Cheers,

I have one - heres a pic

http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af344/996nick2009/Fountain%20Pens/64a1e11c.jpg

Unfortunately it doesn't show the imprint on the barrel too well.

This was my first CS. I have never inked it  so cannot tell you how it writes, but it is a nice size and an impressive pen. Not too "bling" and something you would be uncomfortable about using in the office.

One point (perhaps Mary B could confirm) is that I ordered mine via the UK - the barrel imprint maybe different on the US version.

HTHs.

I have to ask; why haven't you inked it yet?

I am not entirely sure. At the time, it was the most expensive pen I had ever bought, and I wanted to keep it pristine. It just hasnt made it into the rotation yet. It has a nice italic nib too...

What makes it a lawyer pen? What is on the barrel?

Conway Stewart has made two Lawyer Pens and another one is in the making!

Below is an image featuring the Lawyer's pen from Carbolic Smoke Ball who is based in the UK

Here are images of the second Lawyer's pen based on the Winston model.

I love those scales of justice on the cap band of the first pic. Thanks for posting the pics. #1 son is a lawyer, might be a nice gift one day. Right now he still loses expensive gifts on a fairly regular basis.

Most lawyers enjoy history to some extent; consequently, if your son, the budding lawyer, is in line to conduct any amount of public speaking he will appreciate the Churchill history behind the CS pen line. I do.

but what about ease of use? As a lawyer, he needs to be able to cap/uncap quickly, for quick notes. or would this be more of a show type of pen than a take-to-the-courtroom pen?

Pah... Doctors, Lawyers... none of them have any money any more!

CS, you've missed a trick. There's only one 'profession' with any true disposable income any more, and that's bankers!

Actually, come to think of it, you could do a combined new Kipling-banker-professional pen: gold, lashings of diamonds, platinum trim, inscribed with the old master's "Gods of the Copybook Heading":

AS I pass through my incarnations in every age and race,

I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market-Place.

Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn.

That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:

But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breath of Mind,

So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,

Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market-Place;

But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come

That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch.

They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch.

They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings.

So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.

They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.

But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life

(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)

Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,

And the Gods of the Copybook Heading said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,

By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;

But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,

And the Gods of the Copybook Heading said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew,

And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true

That All is not God that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four-

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man-

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:-

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,

And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins

When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,

As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Bankers? Ha, you've been listening to the media. Nope, no disposable income here. Well, there is a little for pens, now that all kids are off my payroll and off my insurance. I also have more free time now, guess that's why I have too much ink.

Unfortunately, I used to work in finance (still do, but from a purely self-interested position). The level of disconnect (and salaries) was, and is, simply astonishing...

I think teachers are a good market for professional pens. In Australia, we can claim back all stationery as work related expense. That said, I don't think the Australian Tax Office will be too impressed if I make a claim for several thousand dollars worth of stationery in one year...

In 2008, before the big banking crisis, I read in a magazine some figures about the annual bonusround in Investment Banking and Insurance (indeed NOT your local man behind the counter)

The amount was staggering. The amount just for that year just for the USA could very well help a country like Greece out of problems. And you could easily buy several millions of Lawyer pens from that amount. After that I was not astonished in the least about what happened a few months later.

I am a recent law grad, and if one of my parents gave this to me as a gift, I would be quite humbled and honored. Not to mention that it is a gift appropriate to the occasion. I just recently heard about this pen, and saw that it was being offered by the "Carbolic Smokeball Company". I'm not very familiar with the history of this pen, and not sure if this is sold exclusively by that company, but I will only add that the "carbolic smokeball" is a significant contracts case that we all read in our first year of law school, and is still tested on the bar. The case is iconic and unforgettable. That, in itself, would make this a hoot, and add extra special meaning. He would definitely get a kick out of that. I'm sure your son will love it.

At any rate, it is a very beautiful pen; that's just my humble opinion. It's definitely a distinguished and appropriate gift.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. - Mark Twain

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
