It has been a while in the coming but finally here's my entry no. 1.

Pens: Mitchel & Brause dip pens

Inks: Quink Red (somewhat evaporated), Pelikan Black, Walnut ink, Pelikan Brilliant Brown

The shading is done with colored pencil.

I wasn't sure about the decoration in the middle so did one without it. I'm still not sure so I'll put in the one with all the elements.

I have a couple of other ideas; a less structured circular composition and one in a simple italic one. I'll upload them before the deadline (hopefully!)

Here goes:

Hi again everyone!

Sorry about this, I know I said last week that I am done with entering anymore but just 2 nights ago, when I was reviewing my entries, the dove calligram, the roundel and the face calligram... (I was procrastinating from work  ) and then out of absolutely nowhere, an idea strikes me :eureka: that may be I can combine all my previous entry ideas into a single piece...

I swear, this is not premeditated, I had no idea that they can be combined until just 2 days ago!

I got so excited, I had to work on it immediately and enter again before the competition closes tonight.

I had to use the same face calligram from before but everything else are new, the roundels (or now the "halos") and the dove are all new and are done specifically for this piece.

I cut out the face calligram and stick it on the largest piece of paper I can find that can still fit on scanner at work (not sure what the "brand" of the paper is, but it is about somewhere between an A2 and A3 in size I guess...) and start working around the face, first the halos (outer lighter halo is done with diluted Lamy blue ink) then the robe and hands and lastly the dove. I added some highlighting / shadowing to the words forming the dove to give it some dimensional (3D) attribute (not sure if that worked but it looks alright, I think  ).

Its quite interesting to see three different scripts working so well together in a single piece!

Pens used: Osmiroid Calligraphy pen Broad, B2 and B4 nibs,

Pilot Parallel (for the outer halo)

Ivison Phineey Spencerian No. 1 nib (for the dove),

Staedtler Mars Lumography B2 pencil for the shading the face.

Inks used: Mont Blanc black for the face,

Lamy blue for inner halo,

Diluted Lamy Blue for the outer halo,

Aurora black for the robe and hands,

Marlen blue for the dove and Mont Blanc black again

for the highlights/shadows on the dove.

Since the face was shaded in from the previous entry, I had to take it out from the body, erase the pencil marking and stick it back in to scan for the the "no shading version". That is why you may notice the faces' position in relation to the body are not exactly the same.

Now, bare with me since it is my last entry :notworthy1: . I have actually drawn the body all the way down to below the waist but then I was afraid that the focus is misplaced. The focus, I think, should be on the writings which are all located on the upper body. So I cropped it out into the images shown above but I really didn't want the rest to go to waste so I am posting the full picture here as well.

I can't decided which version is better though, I will let the judges decide. :notworthy1:

That is it, for real this time, because it is closing in two hours here in NZ! It feels like it has come full circle, I entered my first piece on the first day of the competition and my final piece on the very last day!

Cheers if you read all the way to here!

Well, this isn't anywhere near the brilliance of the previous entries, but that nib is worth trying for...Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is despair and I have a bad entry, grant me hope.

My apologies; I forgot to include the pen/ink/paper information! I feel like quite the fool now.

Pen: Sheaffer "Viewpoint" Calligraphy Fountain pen

Ink: Sheaffer Skrip Blue

Paper: Just regular Xerox "ColorLok" Premium Multipurpose Paper

Very nice work lamder.

Sorry but may I please ask if there is any reason to write "let me an instrument of your peace" instead of the given text of "make me an instrument of your peace?" Thanks.

I'm torn between Andybiotic's anthropormorphic and the Salman's symmetry. I confess my tenency toward minimallism and symmetry has me leaning toward Salman's, but I'm wondering if a larger scale than a computer screen would lend something to Andy's St Francis :hmm1:

Hi GP, why do you like the YOL Viceroy Grand if you are a minimalist and like symmetry, you should have the corinthian, just like me. :roflmho: I am just joking of course :roflmho: Thanks for your comment. I, too, admire the symmetrical rendering of Salman's piece!

And I love it that you use the word "anthropormorphic" to describe my piece! How original!

Its interesting now that I think about it, I personally like symmetry when it comes to decorations (around the house) etc but I am quite asymmetrical when it comes to art or art-like subjects. When I sketch portraits (or other drawings I do) I tend to sketch everything on an angle (like in the face calligram) or on the side... :hmm1:

Ouch. I hadn't even realized I made a typo until you pointed it out. I went back and looked at previous drafts, and apparently it started with the very first! I blame the person who copied out the passage for reference while working on the drafts. Wait, that was me.

No point in explaining idiocy, but if I am to theorize as to how my brain and hands conspired on this crime, I would say it probably went something like this:

Brain: "Hands, let's get to work. Write me some 'Make me ...'"

Hands: "Roger that!"

Hands affix pen, reach for the bottle of ink.

Brain wanders.

Brain: "That 'let me sow' clause is really poo-poo-ing on the symmetry of this whole thing, huh."

Hands dip pen into ink, wipes off excess.

Hands: "Locked and loaded, Brain."

Brain: "Go ahead!"

Brain, thinking ahead, now in verse:

"
Let me
sow",

"
Let me
sow",

Let me
see where to place that

"
Let me
sow".

Hands write: "L...e...t....."

Embarrassingly yours,

Sam

:roflmho: That is funny.

I only asked because I thought it is a different version of the passage I didn't know of!

I guess "Let me be an instrument of your peace" kinda make sense too....??

Well, here goes my entry.

I have to include three pictures so that you can see the whole piece.

Originally, I intended to use a smaller marker, but given the height of these floor planks, I have to opt for a bigger 'nib'.

The style is somehow half-uncial but I don't curve my 'l' here, and I modify some alphabets here and there along the way.

The photos were taken at night, so the lighting may not be perfect. -_-

The pen is Zig Illumigraph 15 mm wet-erasable marker.

The paper here is Scandinavian Naturals hardwood floor plank, if I'm not mistaken.

Updated: With the help from Beak to stitch the photos together, I reupload the piece in its full entirety. Thanks a lot! ;)
