Kaweco Sport Vs. Lamy Safari

Oh Lamy Safaris come in an EF and Kaweco Sports decidedly do not...if that helps you decide.

The Goulets sell an EF version of the Kaweco these days -- or do you mean that the Kaweco EF is not really much of an EF? (I haven't tried it myself, so I wouldn't know.)

Lamy because you can exchange their numerous nibs.

Honest answer?...I sorta forgot about those... :headsmack:

My apologies.

No clue how fine they are I don't have one.

I should really stop answering questions and stick to asking them...

I love both pens, but I think the Kaweco is the winner if you intend to carry it in your pocket.

One down side: you must unscrew the Kaweco's cap and then post it on the pen barrel before you can write. This isn't a problem for taking notes in a class or meeting. It's very inconvenient when you've answered the phone and need to jot something down quickly with only one hand free, though. The Safari is a much better "jotter" because of that.

I prefer the grip and feel of the Nexx M of the 4 pens, just more comfortable.

I have to second this. The grip section of the Nexx is the best of any pen I've ever used at any price. The pen's weight and balance are absolutely perfect, too. I wish I liked the way it looked.

I have a Lamy AL-Star with a Fine nib and very much enjoy using this pen. My hand naturally forms to the unique grip so that is not a problem for me at all. I am a sucker for (relatively) cheap pens, so I just purchased a Kaweco Classic Sport. It has the smoothest fine nib I have ever purchased out of the box. Very nice little pen. You have to post the cap to effectively use the Kaweco. There are many differences between the two pens. I think everyone else has described most of the differences. I just wanted to comment on the smoothness of the Kaweco fine nib.

+1 on the Kaweco being very smooth and satisfying right out of the box. I just got mine (M nib) today, inked it up as an eyedropper, and it's working very well.

I picked the Lamy vista because it was a demonstrator, It had a ton of reviews that were positive. The Kaweco is small and only takes cartridges...sure you can convert it to an eyedropper but I don't want the mess right now. I got my Lamy Vista with the z24 converter so I can use lots of inks with it. Right now I've got Noodler's 5 O'clock Shadow. The only issue I'm finding is that it is skipping? I'd start to write a sentence or sometimes in the middle when I'm crossing my T's. There is plenty of ink and I don't know if its the ink itself or if there is something wrong? or if I'm doing something. I even flushed it out with water and refilled the converter. All in all Its smooth and its fine nib writes in a .5mm like the G2! Any body have any Ideas?

Favorite Pen: TWSBI 540 (F) is my "Special Pen" Lamy Vista (F) is my take around pen.

Favorite Ink(s): Baystate Blue, J.Herbin 1670 --- Current Ink: Noodler's: Baystate Blue, TWSBI 540 (F), Private Reserve; Sherwood Green, Lamy Vista (F)

Favorite Paper: Rhodia Dot Pad A5

I like my Kaweco Sport's better than my Lamy Safari's. I have 2 Safari's a 1.1 & M nib, and both of my Kaweco's EF & M are 10 times smoother than my Safari's. My Kaweco is even smoother than my Visconti. Only my Edison is smoother than my Kaweco.

I think it has to do with your converter. I have issues with converters in several brands of fountainpens. There have been discussions about that here on the forum. It has to do with trapped airbubbles in the converter. An airbubble can prevent te flow of the rest of the ink to the feed. Probably this has to do with the forces of cohesion and adhesion. Try if you keep having this problem with a normal cartridge. I seldom have problems with cartridges.

I have owned a couple of Lamy Safari's and one Al Star. I hated every one of them. They feel cheap, the nib dries out relatively cheaply and I have never liked snap on caps. I now own a Kaweco Sport, and like it much better. It is very short when capped, but writes like a dream. I tried converting it to an eyedropper, but experience leakage. Works great with a standard cartridge!! I really like my Kaweco.

(If the Kaweco comes out on top I might consider the aluminium version... but then there is a whole other price bracket to consider as well!)

Forget the aluminum Kaweco, The Lamy Studio is a much nicer pen for about the same price.

I've both and I prefer the Kaweco. With the Lamy the click-on cap has loosened during the last years. It just takes a hefty flick with your hand and the cap flies away. Plus I have seen many broken Lamys.

BUT (!!): The Lamy has the great, great advantage to swapthe nibs in under three seconds. Napkin, pull, wipe, next one, push, finished. You can't beat that.

Greetings,

Michael

I prefer the AlStar/Safari nib to the Sport's. I also find the Sport, not uncomfortable, but flawed in the comfort department. Maybe it's because I don't usually post pens.

AlStar/Safari wins in my opinion unless pocket portability is the primary concern. The Sport is great for tossing in a pants pocket.

That's the reason I'll probably get the Kaweco because its a good writer (not that I've tried it yet) but because its portable.... The Aluminum is just too expensive and I agree with "Dave the brew guy" I'd save money on a better pen. No I'll just stick to the clear demonstrator or the Orange one in the near future of pen collecting for when I'm out and about and need to conceal a small but reliable pen!

As another member put it the grip on the Lamy is a little different, a more sensible grip would make it a better pen. The Lamy Fine nib is very smooth, but the Kaweco has a different feel and width to the Fine. The beauty of the Kaweco is 1. The grip is better than the Lamy.

2. The nib is smoother than the Lamy.

3. The feed is very balanced not too wet or not too dry 5 out of 10. This enables you to use a dry or wet ink. The feed flow is a problem that one can experience on more expensive pens too but with Kaweco Sport it is perfect.

4. The size of the pen makes it very convenient to carry around with you.

Although I recommend the Kaweco Sport, the Lamy Safari is not far behind. The advantage of the Lamy is the converter, whereas the convertor for the Kaweco is sometimes difficult to find.

i am watching this old conversation to see if there are some NEW data from users for i am thinking about buying a Kaweco F OR a Pilot Prera F or SF.

I think they are in the same category in price and brand name. i might buy both since the Prera in Amazon is almost the same price of the Kaweco, but what detains me is the definition of Fine nib. I want the finest possible, and think one of them, the Prera has the extra fine… Both should be a good choice i guess.. In the meantime, i can contribute that I love the softness of the Safaris. I have B, F and SF LAMY SAFARIS, my referred been the SF. If F any of the above mentioned pens are as fine as the Lamy Safari and as soft writing, i would be delighted to buy them both. The use would be to carry them where i wouldn't carry more expensive pens and been able to see the ink level is also a plus!

BTW, the sSafari's have never disappointed; no matter how long they have been idle, the moment i put the nib to the paper they write. No dry nibs with my Safaris.

You can get a Prera with a SF nib?

I've got two Kaweco ICE Sport pens, one F, one EF. One's an eyedropper, the other cartridge. Never any leaking or mess with the eyedropper, it just writes longer than the cartridge-using Sport. The F is closer to a Japanse M, the EF is closer to a Japanese F nib, both are quite smooth.

You do really need to post them unless you have very small hands. Posted they've not very much shorter than a Prera; 3mm shorter posted, 16mm shorter capped.

Ouzel... Great information, specially data about the nibs. I knew one of them comes in EF - i would go for the EF when available. So, it is the Kaweco! Then the next issue is how fine is the F nib of a Prera. Both have the feaure i like, they are transparent. I have a TWSBI mini and after being used to this feature i want to see the ink level!
