You do not have a self filling nib #1 you have a No.1 - not the same thing as these were nibs that came out circa 1925 and don't say self filling. In this style they also made a No.2. In self-filling they made 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8. The Secretary was a "special size" that of a 7 (starting in 1923) and becomes the 7-30 nib in 1928.

You are Right, I have just checked my #1s, they don't say 'Self Filling'. :notworthy1:

I have both Secretary and 7-30, which looks like the same size as #8 or Oversize Lifetime nib, will compare again later.

I have never seen #4 & #6, my wish list will have 2 new items...

What's a self filling nib? I hope it's what it sounds like...

Any pen that does not use an eyedropper is a self-filling pen. Everything is contained in the pen itself to fill. Sheaffer nibs from inception until the mid 1920's stated that they were Sheaffer - such size "X" - and self filling.

I ran 70 self fillers and 50% #2, 23% #3, 14% #4, 8.5% #5, 3% #6 and 1% #8. The larger they are the harder they are to find. #4's are pretty common. I don't seek out just large pens though I can see how the typical collector focused on large pens would have a greater balance of larger nibs.

Hi Roger,

I have just done a similar exercise as yours, I have altoghter 37 pens with Sell Filling nibs :

26 - SF #2

8 - SF #3

2 - SF #5

1 - SF #8

On top of these Self Filling nibs, I have 3 Secretary nibs & 5 '7-30' nibs.

I will keep my eye on looking for #4 & #6 to complete my Sell Filling nibs collection   .

As to Secretarys and 7-30's, those I have sought out so I have a disproportionate number of them 7 Secretarys as I have two complete red sets and at least 7 7-30's as these came only in the large clip configuration initially double banded and then unmarked cap in the single banded. I'm really surprised that you don't have 4's at least two or three of them just based on the distribution of other SF nibs that you have.

Hi Roger,

You are right, after reading your SF nib distribution, I was also quite surprise that I never come across any #4... :crybaby:

Thanks for sharing those Secretarys and 7-30s :puddle: , I always think 7-30s have only 2 types : Light Jade with Black tips and Black, both with 2 rings (never seen bright Jade), thus I thought 2 of my 7-30s are incorrect models :

1. Cherry Red, I was told that this pen should be Secretary but it was equipped with 7-30 nib since I bought it more than 10 years ago...

2. Black with lower clip and one wider range (same as the one in your picture)

I have 2 Sr size and 1 Jr size Secretarys, all in Cherry Red, still looking for ringtop as well as BCHR models...

CC;

On your 1 it should have a secretary nib though it could have received a 7-30 nib as a factory replacement, that is something we can never know.

The late limited guarantee pens lack the top stamp, special end bands and the double bands of the first models. They are encountered a lot less than the original models except for the 3-25 in jade as it was only a late model and never had the intro look.

  • 3 weeks later...

Those are some great Sheaffer's Roger. I just came upon the thread now and had one sort of side question, I have a #8 self-filling nib and wanted to know what type of Sheaffers would have come with this pen originally. Should I be looking for early BHR or BCHR oversized flattops only? I realize full well that an OS in RHR, black/red, or overlayed would be next to impossible to find. Also I bought another OS that the pen is just marked Sheaffer's pen with no other markings, it looks like an earlier nib and is a double broad stub flexible nib.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
