Sailor Tokiwa-Matsu 2010

For those who have the new stuff, how does it compare to the now discontinued Epinard? I had considered trying that one and didn't get around to it. Also, anyone know how the color compares to Herbin Vert Empire (which I *do* have a bottle of)?

Thanks.

the ink sheens to a rustic red same with epinard with some ever so slightly minute differences (they are best nearly indifferent to the undiscerning eyes), Vert Empire after trying it out its a good deep green but doesnt have that sheen

also this ink can be used on a flex dip nib mounted on an ebonite feed best case scenario Noodler's Ahab and or vintage flex

Is the Tokiwa not a little lighter than Epinard then? I've been trying to compare what I see in reviews, and that was the impression I got. But maybe the difference isn't really noticeable in person. Would nib size make a difference in showing any distinction between the two?

probably the nib will display any distinction I used the ink when flex writing

I will post my comparison on the first sunny day we have here. It is going to rain tomorrow, but thursday should be good.

How about at least a verbal confirmation in the meantime: same as your early bottle, or not same? Thanks.

Sorry guys! We haven't had a day that's suitable for pictures at a time when I was near my camera. I hope tomorrow will prove a good time.

As a tidbit - Epinard is darker than Tokiwa-matsu of either year, and shockingly, 2014 Tokiwa-matsu is actually a wetter ink than the 2010. You'll see what I mean when I post the pictures, hopefully tomorrow.

I did a comparison with a dip pen yesterday and in addition to being darker, Tokiwa-Matsu was also slightly more yellow and had slightly less red undertones(not the red sheen, they both have that).

I am super annoyed because I took a ton of pictures today for reviews, but it was too dark inside and too bright outside, so everything looked either super washed out or super greyed out. UGH.

These ones came out pretty well though.

2014 up top, 2010 in the middle, and Epinard at the bottom.

Note that when writing text, 2014 and 2010 look quite similar, but because 2014 is wetter, in instances where the ink is pooling, it starts to look much darker, more like Epinard. So bizarre!

Woohoo! Been looking forward to this. Thanks so much for posting. It sounds like the current formulation is capable of being both light and dark, which is kind of cool.

Glad I decided to stock up on epinard. Tokiwa-matsu is lovely but doesn't look like a reasonable facsimile of Epinard. I have both and will probably hoard Tokiwa-matsu as well but for what it is not for replacement. Am I wrong in thinking that greens are particularly complex?

As always, I am most appreciative for those on FPN that make these supreme efforts in making these comparisons and reviews.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
