Nakaya Dorsal Fin - Version 2

This is the first time I post images, so please excuse me for the poor iphone photo quality. Actually what I ordered is a kuro-temanuri with ruthenium plated BB nib, but nibs.com shipped me an aka-tamenuri with gold plated BB nib. Finally I accepted their apologies and keep the pen. The blood like red urushi is vivid and having depth. The hard rubber fin is heavier than acrylic resin like Churchill but having solid feel. Perfect for writing and thinking. Unlike most FPNers choose Japanese fps with F or M nib, I pick up a BB nib which has 1.0mm width providing smoother line variations much better than most western round tipped nibs.

I am sorry that the pen I showed is kuro-tamenuri not aka-tamenuri. In Japanese, kuro means black, and aka means red. That is why I made a mistake. Anyway I would like to say sorry to nibs.com although they still picked up the wrong gold plated nib( I ordered the ruthenium one). Actually I think the gold plated nib fits better in kuro-tamenuri and saved $40.

Despite the mix up with nibs.com, it's a cool looking pen! Thanks for the photos.

My Dorsal Fin has arrived! It feels great in my hand! It's a little longer and wider than I expected. The extra width, along with the fin, gives the pen some heft--it is heavier than my other Nakayas. I do love the Ishime Kanshitsu finish, and the silver-tin powder on the threads is a wonderful touch. It does have a slight bronze tint, which gives the pen a certain amount of warmth color-wise; it looks great with the two-tone nib. This is my first stock BB from Nakaya (my other Nakaya BB was ground into a cursive italic). The round BB nib is quite wide with just a hint of line variation. I must say that I absolutely love not worrying about the cap rolling off my desk!

Congratulations reprieve! I don't doubt that you will love the Dorsal Fin.

Best wishes

thanks for a wonderful review with ditto photos. I have had mine in kuro-tamenuri for half a year now and love it. There is just something about this model that draws me. It looks like a classic samurai sword housing to me.
