Pelikan Striated Barrel Slightly Twisted

rollerboy

Recommended Posts

I just received a green striated Pelikan M600. I'm noticing that the striations/stripes ever so slightly spiral around the long axis of the barrel giving at least the optical illusion that the barrel itself is slightly twisted. From section to turning knob I'd say any given stripe is about one stripe width out of alignment.

Basically I'm curious as to whether I've got a pen with a manufacturing defect or whether this is typical of the striated Pelikans and possibly even deliberate design to enhance sparkle potential.

Just looking at my new M800, I see what you mean - the stripes are straight, but they appear to spiral rather than follow the axis of the pen.

On my 600s the stripes are straight and follow the axis. However, I believe that they are produced as an overlay and shrunk and bonded to the barrel during manufacture. Something like that.

Perhaps the overlay was twisted during the process in error.

Could make them collectors pieces but if you're concerned, get an exchange.

Hmmm...there are two ways of looking at it:

1. Look at it as a DEFECT and you'll bother yourself over the matter until you exchange for a normal-looking striated green.

2. Take that defect as something special and labeling it "PROTOTYPE" to the normal striated world and you'll cherish it forever.

Maybe this will cheer you up, see PROTOTYPE.

And if you find a few with this special attribute, you can upgrade from 'prototype' to 'unique,' if you are selling them on ebay, that is.

apparently some Older Pelikans did have wavy/not straight stripes, I asked about it too, my link.

All Strip pelikan are either straight or twisted.

There is no identical strip pen vs another strip.

I have never found a strip pen same as another strip pen. That is the beauty of pelikan pens.

No same pen you can ever find that same like your pen.

I hereby strongly emphasis that twisted strip is NORMAL.

Interesting, but I don't think we're talking about the same effect. Mine you wouldn't describe as "wavy". In my case the stripes are straight and parallel but from section to turning knob each stripe travels around the circumference about one stripe width.

All my tortoises have straight stripes, but I have an old style blue M400 and a new M800 and M1000 green which have that same very slight twist. It has never bothered me, given that the binde has an organic semi-natural feel, the contrast between this (you get uneven concentrations of darker browns in the tortoise stripes which give the same effect)and the astonishing precision of the deco band inlays which other companies would find hard to match, is somehow very effective. The awesome fit and finish of Pelikan pens is perhaps something that we fans take for granted.

I assume the stripes are applied in the form of a heat-shrink tube and it just depends if they sit straight on the pen or at a slight angle when the heat is applied. As we have said, the stripes are perfectly straight, just not parallel to the axis of the pen in a few of our examples.

I can honestly say I hadn't noticed until it was mentioned but I think it gives the pen a wonderful hand finished look.

I have several striated green Pelikans, mainly M800, a couple of R800 and an M1000. There is quite a bit of variability in the orientation of the stripes, some are slightly spiral, a couple are a little on the 'wavy' side. It's not a sign of poor QC, because in every other respect the fit and finish of the pens is perfect. The individuality of each binde just adds a little character, and helps me to identify a particular pen without unscrewing the cap

@Pjay That is the beauty of Pelikan pens.

That is their objective.

Few years ago, I sold 2pcs of m600 or m800.

I get complain by a person about the twist and tell me that he is a pro in Pelikan

He even posted here before and threaten to complain to Pelikan Germany.

I'm really wondering how pro is he for not knowing thay it is a norm.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had M405 Blue that was excessively (I think) spiraled (it was almost 30 degrees shift).

I could not stand it and Abi at Chartpak replaced the barrel for me.

The new barrel has some amount of twist but I like it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
