Feminine Or Masculine?

I have just enjoyed goodguy1's excellent topic on Montblanc. The opening phrase 'The Queen vs the Princess' got me thinking.

What gender are your fountain pens?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

In portuguese, my native language , pen is a female word, so I can't think "pen" as a male gender. The phrase "The Queen vs the Princess" (MB 149 vs MB 146) sounds me perfect, cause both are two the best fountain pens of all ages.

I've seen pens referred to as both masculine and feminine on FPN. But gender has pretty much disappeared in modern English. Exceptions exist though. Ships are women, so are continents. These words are a throwback to Old English. They carry scars of the past.

Sheaffer probably played the gender card as much as any pen company. As far back as the 1940s the Tuckaway was a unisex pen but later became a pen for women only. The Lady Sheaffer was, of course, gender specific. So was the beefy PFM (Pen for Men). I have a PFM and a Tuckaway but tend not to think of them as having gender. I call any pen an 'it'.

Ships, cars, and aeroplanes are female.

Helicopters, tractors and motorcycles are male.

Paintbrushes are female. Pencils are male.

Ballpoint pens might be female, although sometimes a little butch.

Fountain pen gender depends on shape, girth, and nib size:

Small nibbed pens are usually female, with the exception of Parker 51's, they are decidedly male.

Thin pens, such as Cross, are female. Unless they have big nibs, then they are male, even though they are thin. All big nib pens are male. Dip pens are female. Thick pens are male, unless they have small nibs, then they are also female - older females, aunties, if you wish.

All Sheaffers are male. Parker Sonnets are female. Duofolds are male.

Montblanc 139's and 149's are male. The Agatha Christie, Greta Garbo, Catherine the Great, Elizabeth 1 and Black Widow are female. The other WE's and POA's are all male.

The 146 is, unfortunately, of indeterminate gender.

S.T. Dupont did the answering for you with one of its models, which was named "Lady." I've only seen pictures of them, and they look slim and attractive. The Cross Sentiment seems also to wish to be seen as "feminine," since it comes with a little heart charm attached to the clip.

My pens have no gender, but someone did mention ships being female. When I was in the Navy, I was stationed aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74). How is a ship with a man's name and named after a man a she? Come to think of it, I don't ever remember referring to the ship as "she" either. This has baffled me for years.

I guess if I had to assign a gender to my pens it would have to be masculine. Pens to me are tools, and tools are manly and awesome.

For your first pen, you should buy a Pelikan m200 or a TWSBI 540.

For vintage, get a Parker Vacumatic or a 51.

Once you go Vac, you never go back.

Yes, I've been drinking.

Greetings all,

Crazy me, I just always thought of pens as pens.

However, if I would ever have to break it down; I think my list would pretty much jive with 3124's, (with the exceptions of Pelikan M200s, due to its petite size and the Parker Urban, due to its overt feminine shape; have always seemed feminine to me).

All the best,

Sean :)

(with the exceptions of Pelikan M200s, due to its petite size . . . ).

Do I get the feeling that somebody is overcompensating?

All it's.

Not a single ship or motorcycle, both female because of unexpected behavior....dangerous unexpected behavior. Sinking or falling down unexpectedly.

Men are expected behavior. They fall down when expected.

I'd have to disagree with the M2xx just due to it's overall shape, but I do agree about the Urban. I'd forgotten about that one. Otherwise I'd have listed it with the Sonnet.

Hello Tom and Rufus,

Quite right! This has always been my POV... although I have been know to refer to my car as a "she"- but I think that is simply based on tradition. :)

English considers objects neuter. Some other languages, not so much. If you had some of the pens I have, you might think the pens were indeed highly animated and full of intent to aggravate and annoy.

By that logic, all of my pens are male with the exception of my Waterman Exception, but it is off to the "doctor" for an *ahem* sex change before too long.

In the Spanish language all objects have a gender…so pens in Spanish, at least, are female.

Change is not mandatory, Survival is not required.
