Striped Acrylic Pen Blanks?

FlatCactus

Recommended Posts

I did a quick google search as well as a browse on the store webpage that I buy my pen kits from and couldn't find these.

I was wondering if acrylic blanks are made that look similar to the Pelikan pen striated style that goes along the length of the barrel?

Any input is appreciated.

I've been told that the "striped" Pelikans are actually a striped covering -- made of a bunch of individual pieces, no less -- over a clear barrel.

They're also much more expensive than anything I want to carry. Or pay for. So I haven't gotten a good look at one for many years. But I do remember the spaces between the stripes being transparent.

Seeing all those SQUARE pen blanks, and having nothing I would DARE use to turn anything that wasn't already round, I'm always reminded of some of the episodes of The Woodwright's Shop, where Roy covered turning with human-powered lathes. And carefully pre-rounded the stock with drawknives and spokeshaves (and maybe even a rounder plane) before putting it on the lathe.

Why? Turning a square blank into a round one is done quite easily with a gouge or scraper. Just go slow.

Yes, but remember: The Woodwright's Shop generally features either a treadle lathe or a spring-pole lathe (or occasionally a great-wheel lathe).

And all I have is a drill press. Knocking off corners with that would likely either cause the chuck to drop out, or launch the cutting tool across the room. Or both.
