Jackets For Women Not Having Pen Pockets!

I've a friend who maintains the lack of pockets in womens (semi-)formal wear is a conspiracy to force women to depend upon men-- because if you've got nowhere to carry your money, you'd better have a chap on hand. It's a little more pursuasive than some of her theories.

Loving the femenist theory but i wouldn't trust my boyfriend to carry my pen! :P

As for all of these diy pockets, this is looking like the way i will have to go

It's a dastardly plot to make life easier for bag-snatchers, who are predominantly male. The obvious solution is to slip a photographer's vest on over the top, with 32 pockets on the front and half a dozen on the back including one big enough for a 5-kilo tripod (or a let's-soak-the-punters limited-edition marketing weevil's ego). Outdoor Man make a very fetching one in gold lamé.

Alternatively, acquire a restored Conway Stewart Dinkie ringtop and a fine gold chain, and wear it as what my ladylike student friends in bygone days used to call a bosom basher.

When you're good at it, it's really miserable.

How many of you remember Edith Head, the Hollywood costume designer? This conversation makes her ever present smocks make more sense, not to mention the apron (which was my Grandmother's ever-present over-garment).

I work with librarians, and some of them also wear a scrubs-like jacket over their clothes while working with books.

I actually love the way a pressed smock looks, but thought they would seem like an affectation in this day and age.

For guys too... I end up wearing my whitecoat to class for medical school, as I find that scrubs (our uniform) doesn't have any pockets. On my white coat, there are 6 large pockets, good for anything i decide to carry.

I believe there is a study out there (appeared in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal some years ago) that proves that the correlation between the weight of items carried around in a white coat and the seniority of the doctor is inverse: the more junior the doctor, the more stuff he/she will carry around, whereas consultants/attendings walk about with empty pockets.

I wear a vest always, just because of the pockets. Mine are all the same and each has 10 or 12 pockets. For my keys and cell phone and all papers, ID cards, credit cards, driver's licence etc, booklets, and, of course pens and inks. My own form of a non-female purse or handbag.

That's a great point, one I hadn't even thought of. There are several companies that make unisex, male, and female vests with numerous pockets, while not looking tremendously out-of-place in most situations - formal dress notwithstanding. I personally prefer ScottEVest, but their products are rather expensive at $100 for the basic (26-pocket, feature-loaded) vest. Still, it can be a good alternative to a purse for either sex, as they make male and female travel vests and a unisex lightweight vest (without the Thinsulate-like layer, I believe).
