Travel Notebook With A Hardcover?

Hey all,

Before you write of Moleskine hear me out!

When I travel, I do not bring fountain pens, just ballpoints. That being said, paper quality is less of an issue, but even my ballpoints write better on Rhodia etc than normal paper

Point 1) I love the Moleskine hardcovers...they are super durable and great for travel. Nice band when it's around the book.

Point 2) Moleskines lay nice and flat. Even with a hardcover!

What are other hardcover journals suited for travel? I know Leuchtturm 1917 makes a nice one, but who else?

I'm also looking to avoid anything custom. Around 20 dollars is best. Even the Webbies don't seem like the best choice for getting tossed around.

Thanks as always

My daughter recently switched from Moleskine to an EcoSystem Notebook (http://ecosystemlife.com/) for a recent European trip and she loved the EcoSystem and is now hooked on them. Also, she's pretty hard on journals as she likes them beat-up and stuffed with stuff.

If you want something RB, BP and FP ink compliant, waterproof and able to mimic John Cameron Schwazie(do I date myself?)It takes a licking and keeps on ticking, I've got the notebook for you buddy. Engineering Field Notebook. 4 x 6" Hard cover, minor lays flat issues, designed to be used in the field in harsh conditions, cotton fiber 25% lined or grid paper. Available in single pieces at Ben Meadows on line. If in UK look at amazin.uk(Amazon). If you buy in bulk (6 pack) engineering supply. is the cheapest. 4 x 6 will fit in most Suit coat, field jacket pockets. Bit tall for Jeans back pockets. Look for surveyors notebooks, lots of styles on lined and grid paper. About $9/each with 80 or so pages. I have ones carried in Vietnam in late 60's, Oman mid 70's and daily in College, Professional School and Life. In the hospital and in the field. They took it all and still look great.

Enjoy your trip, Jim

"Engineering Field Notebook" ... do you mean "Rite In The Rain" ?

Rite in the rain I've used. Works well with a space pen. The one's I'm enarmoured with are AKA Surveyors Notebooks. Elan has them on engineeringsupply. web site. Look for model 64-64. Hardbound, Level Book. Bright Orange cover, lined pages of 25% cotton paper, highly FP friendly, reguardless of ink, nib width, pen etc. I've not been able to add any photos since I wrote a Red Horseshoe review several weeks ago. I'm reportedly over my limit or I'd include one here in. Sorry, Jim

Zequenz 360 notebook would be good for traveling. While it is not hardback it does fold back on itself so you can write any where without the extra weight that hard cover brings. It is very flexible so the Mini version fits in your back pocket and you can sit on it without butt stabbing. The paper and cover quality are really good, i have been keeping in my back pocket everyday since December, no pages have come out or detached from the cover or rips.

Have fist, will travel

The Zequenz 360 notebook looks cool, and sort of reminds me of the Miquelrius. If I were using the Zequenz 360, I could see myself easily using a rubber band to hold a pen in place.

I travel with a couple of Black n' Reds, and have been happy. I don't know how widely they're available, though. I think they're a European-only brand. I've only seen them in Euro sizes. (Nothing in letter, legal, etc.)

Well, that is welcome news as they are currently in stock at Office Depot. I just saw some today but had not heard of them and did not bite. Next time I stop in, I will pick up a few.

My Quo Vadis Habana has survived being bashed around pretty admirably. Pretty similar to a Moleskine, but better paper.

I just picked up some Eccolo "Be the Change" journals (6"x8") at Office Depot. I don't think these are the same type as were mentioned earlier. There are so many "green friendly" paper products out there, it's pretty easy to get them confused. I'll check the local Barnes and Noble tomorrow for the others.

The covers are made of "recycled leather" (I don't even want to know what they were before). They are wire bound, which I prefer over the Moleskine type because they take up half the space when opened. The paper is a nice ivory color that looks good with wine-colored inks. And the paper has an audible "tooth" to it when writing, making it slightly dry to the nib. However, there is no feathering from any of the 5 nibs I tried (fine, medium, medium, medium stub, and fine stub), and no bleeding through with any of the 5 different inks.

And if you have a Republican friend you wish to annoy, you can buy him the Al Gore model for his birthday.

I just ordered a Zequenz notebook because of all the positive things people had to say about it...and the fact that its now available on Amazon.com.

I wish the small size had more pages but I am going to give it a try!

Indeed. You can not only use just about any pen imaginable, but also paint the pages with watercolors.

Black n' Red notebooks are actually pretty easy to get in the US. They're distributed by Mead here, so Walmart, Staples and Office Depot all carry them in both wirebound and hardbound. I've noticed that the price really varies from store to store.
