Disassembling A Hero 616?

Ink Sandwich

Recommended Posts

I have a Hero 616 with a slightly misaligned nib / feed. (I know it's a cheapo pen, but so far it writes really well - just a cosmetic problem.)

Also, I was curious if it is possible to replace the pump action converter with something else? ... Honestly, I'n not a big fan of that kind of converters.

Is it possible to disassemble a Hero 616 and put it back together, without damaging the pen?

Regards,

Ink Sandwich :)

I think the answer is yes on both counts.

I am a total newbie here, and - be warned - I may be counseling the ruination of your pen in a messy inky debacle.

Firstly, I'm pretty sure you can pull off the metal covering over the bladder.

As to the alignment of the nib: One on my Hero 616 pens was leaking from the mid-section. It was writing beautifully, with very good ink flow from the nib - and through the threaded mid-section. I managed to unscrew the front section that covers the nib, and then disassemble the remaining parts. Then I reassembled and re-aligned the nib. I never did figure out why it is leaking, and the parts are all now in a baggie. : <

I don't remember how I managed to unscrew the front section, but I would guess that you hold the threaded part firmly with one thumb and forefinger, and twist the front section.

Yep. Heat some water in the microwave, soak the hood of the pen in the hot water, then unscrew it. No prob. Then twist the nib feed a little whichever way it needs. Then put a little shellac or silicone grease on the threads and put it all back together.

There was no sealant. That's probably why you had a leak. You use some silicone grease or shellac and it should be just fine.

not sure it would fit. but why wouldn't you just get a proper "51" nib? mauricio has some for sale (octanium) and they can be found pretty readily online. Brian of esterbrook.net even has a few (I bought one from him a little while back).

link to mauricio click this then scroll UP a tiny bit. big pile of nibs.

The 616 has a point and feed which are rather narrower than that of a "51"-- you could FORCE a "51" point to fit, but then you'd have it stuck in a body that's not so great being fed by a collector which, I've found, can dribble a little, and all at the cost of rendering the point incapable of going back to the pen it was meant to be in (because squishing is lots easier than expanding). I'd urge against it.

edit-- OOPS. Read the direction of transplant wrong. I think the amount of effort won't be worth the results, but if you want to try to open the inner diameter of a 616 point so it won't wreck the feed in a "51", I won't try to stop you.

Thanks guys!

I was able to disassemble it and put it back together (now with the nib aligned right). Looks like I can't remove the converted since it's glued to the pen, but what do you expect from a 3$ pen.

Thanks for the help! :)

I have just received a new Hero 616 and unfortunately the filler mechanism doesn't work properly. I assume the idea is that the fine tube inside the bladder is supposed to expel air enabling the next withdrawal of ink to enter the bladder. This doesn't happen. When the bladder is pressed, all it does is expel the ink it has already drawn up. Any suggestions apart from returning it? At £2.55 I suppose you get what you pay for!

Take the metal cage off the sac, carefully, wiggling it, and squeeze the sac to fill it.

Check to see if the tube is attached to the inside of the pen, if it's floating around, it can't do it's job, and won't fill.

you could take it apart and reset the tube in the back of the feed if you need to. not too difficult.

let us know.

I slid off the metal cage. The thin inner tube is attached to the black section under the nib and slid out easily - almost too easily and it doesn't seem to be attached firmly to the nib section other than by light friction. The tube is attached firmly to the black end and it is clear - I blew through it to check. I pushed the inner tube back into the pen but it still does not work. I have asked for a refund!

The supplier has given me a refund and doesn't want the pen back!

I treat the 616 as a bulb-filler rather than an aerometric-style; the aluminum case on the sac is pretty much just decorative. If the interior tube is seated in the feed, then pressing the sac directly between your fingers ought to see it fill.

Very grateful for the offer but I fear the postal costs to the US will be more than the pen is worth. I'll check the postage.

I had another fiddle about with the pen yesterday evening and I think that I have cured the problem. There may have been a minor blockage where the pipe exits near the nib. It now fills but needs quite a few presses (far more than my Duofold needs) before the ink level increases to about half way up the bladder, which seems to be the maximum achievable. It is something I can live with. The pen itself writes very well and is well balanced.

Thanks for your help

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
