Pen Stand?

Recommended Posts

I'm a relatively new fountain pen user and find that at my desk I'm constantly uncapping and capping my fountain pen. After a little searching, I'm guessing that what I need is a pen stand.

My main pen is a MB Dostoevsky FP and I have two main questions about a pen stand (or other accoutrement that you might recommend).

(1) For what material should I look so that my FP doesn't get scratched?

(2) I thought that pens should be capped in the upright position so that ink doesn't potentially drip. Most pen stands that I've found seem to indicate you store them nib-down? Should I be looking for something that allows me to keep the pen at a certain vertical position? What angle?

Thanks!

Storing horizontally is fine. I use a pen box, and my desk is also covered with a runner, so no scratches.

Welcome to the forum!

If you're trying to avoid re-capping the pen between short breaks in usage, I've seen chopstick holders used as stands. They come in a variety of materials. There are also acrylic horizontal pen stands, and some people, of which I am one, use vintage floral frogs....you can find them on ebay or at flea markets....they are commonly made of glass, so finding one with smooth unscratched or broken edges is important. Like Blade Runner, I also use pen boxes on my desk top for storage...those come in lots of styles and recycled sources.

Have fun researching and shopping!

To relieve the repetitive capping and uncapping of a pen while writing, I suspect the OP is looking for something like these beauties:

These belong to FPN Member and MB expert Multiechelon.

The pen stands are sold by Montblanc and come in several sizes - one size for the flagship 149 and a smaller diameter trumpet for the slightly smaller MB 146 / 147. I think your Dostoevsky is 146 sized, and that the 146 sized Meisterstuck Desk Stand would suit your needs.

Here are a couple of these stands currently on eBay. Remember, these come in 149 size and in 146 size. I think your Dostoevsky is cased on the 146 sized pen, but because the Dostoevsky is not a true 146, the fit may not be perfect. Try to be sure you can return the desk stand if it does not fit. You should call a Montblanc Boutique and ask if your Dostoevsky will fit the Meisterstuck Desk Stand for the 146.

Don't know which size this one is: http://cgi.ebay.com/MONT-BLANC-MEISTERSTUCK-PEN-DESK-STAND-/270701169473?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f070c0b41#ht_500wt_1014

^^^ I like your ashtray. Love the idea of a sliding support to accommodate the burn.

hisnibs has a bunch of pen holders, I have his Federation 1 pen stand that works great to store pens nib up, or nib down. Nib down, just place the cap in it, and put the pen back in. Don't screw it back if you use it like a desk stand, and when you're done just invert and store it normally!

I have a bunch of simple stands, but my fav is the Nakaya double sword pen holder. The usushi finish is great and the holder

works out GREAT.

Best of luck!

After a quick trip to my local hardware store and about 20 minutes of work, here it is:

Over and above its obvious good looks and top-drawer sophistication, my pen stand has several appealing characteristics (to me at least). First, it takes up virtually no usable space on the desk, running parallel to the edge. It's also expandable -- it can fill up the length of the desk with simple, modular additions (sold separately). And, it's dirt cheap -- find something better? Just toss it, or convert the galvanized steel parts to paperweights. The pictured 9-pen model ran about $8. You just screw it together following the simple instructions, and drill it through.

An MB ink bottle laid on its side, makes a good pen rest.

Empty the contents if you dont trust the seal, although I have never had a problem,

I've seen chopstick holders used as stands.

That is a really neat idea. I'm going to try to find a few the next time I'm near Chinatown in my city. Thanks for that.

Give plastic toothbrush holders a try. Many different colors and best of all they are

inexpensive. If you have a local Walmart take a look at them.

If you have a Cost Plus World Market nearby, they often have them. Also some nice rectangular dishes that make excellent pen trays.
