Online Pen Shopping In Canada

Sorry, the link is www.stylo.ca!

They have a good deal on Lamy Safari's right now, but the shipping charges eat up the savings.

I've noticed that slot of Canadian pen stores have high shipping prices. You're better off ordering from our lovely neighbours in the UK or US! :)

That's mainly because of Canada Post and their excessive shipping costs within Canada.

I usually buy from the US and Hong Kong.

Made my first purchase from the UK last week - I've got some ink coming in (Quink Permanent Blue), hoping it arrives tomorrow.

I am not allowed to get the Safari right now anyway. I've been told not to buy one myself...

That is very correct. I felt a little bad with the last pen I sold on the forum. I charged the honest price but after a long discussion with the postmistress I realized it would be cheaper to ship to the US or even the UK! What her superiors were thinking we don't know. It is just an odd fact of shipping in Canada. Imagine that it would be cheaper to send a vintage waterman across the pond than one province over. There is some sort of joke in there, but I hate being on the receiving end f it to appreciate it.

Need money for pens, must make good notebooks. :)

I think I've only had duty and/or GST charged once or twice, but it's something you should be prepared for and then be happy if you don't get charged rather than not expecting it and being annoyed when you are.

Well put.

I'll add my two cents worth. I live in Edmonton and am a fan of Stylus. I usually buy my ink there but for pens I usually order online. For your price range you could try Pengallery (www.pengallery.com) or melpens (www.melpens.com). Both stores are in Malaysia. Both ship via Fed Ex and arrive in ~48hrs after shipping. Great customer service and great prices. They both carry Lamy's etc. Fed Ex will usually send you a bill for duties a few weeks later. I will also second the advice of Halden and buy a TWSBI (google search for their eBay store). The Diamond 530 is a fantastic pen and ~$40. Shipped via USPS. Good Luck!

PS As for pen choices: Lamy Safari, Lamy Al-Star, TWSBI Diamond 530

Another vote for Pengallery. Malaysia to Quebec in 4 days! I just got my Lamy 2000 today. Excellent service.

I'm in Victoria and have had wonderful service and products from the Vancouver Pen Shop which doesn't have a web site but is willing to talk for as long as it takes if you have a cheap long distance plan.

Glenn's Page has other Vancouver shops listed, but I haven't been there myself. www.marcuslink.com/pens/

This is my first post, so I apologize if I violate any of the local customs!

I've had nothing but fantastic service at the Vancouver Pen Shop. I've bought 5 Lamy safaris there (3 for me, 2 for others), and have often talked shop with them.

It's a family-run business that I always try to support. It's also the only place in Vancouver I've seen that stores Clairefontaine notebooks. I take all my school notes on Clairefontaine notebooks.

I haven't been there in a few years, but I'll have to go back, probably this week, as I seem to have lost my pen case with my 3 Lamys at school last week. :crybaby:

I just visited Peel's in Montreal for the first time, and had to wait a long time for service and found few choices. I finally purchased a Conklin Cushion Point pen and then when I checked it on-line found it available for half of what I had paid, although that was in the US, but with the high Canadian dollar I felt a bit ripped off. I would stick with Vancouver Pen Shop if you can.

Huh - Peel's is still there?!? I could have sworn it disappeared from Union St a while ago...I'll have to walk by there again.

FWIW, I buy almost all my pens online (eBay or FPN) from the US, UK or DE but ink is bought locally from Maison du Stylo in the basement of Scotiabank Cinema/Simons (GREAT service and advice, prices are just OK) and paper (Rhodia and Clairefontaine pads) is bought from Omar de Serres in Place Montreal Trust (OK service and prices). I realize that there's probably a bit more markup that online but I'd prefer to support a physical pen store closeby just in case of emergencies...

I've had good relations with HisNibs.com who uses the mails, and with jetpens.com. And several good experiences (and none bad) buying from FPN members. Have fun!! My faves are Stylus in Edmonton and Nota Bene in Montreal. His ecommerce page is a bit antique, but you can always phone Nota Bene and place an order that way. They have LOTS of stock that never appears in the web catalogue, like pens and inks and a wide variety of paper products.

+1 for Nota Bene. Nice folks. Going there in person was one of the positives of my treks up to Montreal from Boston. (Great bagels and the general kindness of the people I met there were other positives.)

Oh no...you said 'bagel'. I can smell them, fresh from the ancient brick oven and redolent of maplewood smoke. Clasped to the bosom still hot, in a paper bag and rushed to the car to have the first taste. Poppy seed are best, but sesame will do. Sure, I miss them fiercely. There is no bagel but a Montréal bagel, whatever New Yorkers may think.

Some very good suggestions - which I'm going to follow up too! I do recommend http://www.stylusfinepens.com for stylus pens in Edmonton. I've had a good service experience with Goulet Pens too - not sure how their prices compare but very fast and thorough in their service.
