I am guessing that most replies are going to say a Parker 51 and rightfully so...they write forever, low maintenance and reasonable priced (if you do get a 51, get a monster nib on it...some kind of stub, oblique, etc.). I would recommend a modern duofold or better yet a vintage one...they come in lots of different colors, sizes, nib types, etc. Get it restored to perfection and you will have one great pen.

Greetings FreshCinnamon,

Provided all things are equal in regards to condition: a 51 Aerometric or an older 45.

All the best,

Sean :)

I agree with all the Parker "51" Aerometric fans: It's no doubt one of the best pens ever built.

...but if you prefer cartridge fillers, it has to be a Parker "61". (of course, I mean the later c/c filler P "61")

I have to agree that the 51 is a good writer, but to me, a complete disappointment to look at. With the hooded nib, there is just nothingness... (I like good-looking nibs)

My favorite Parker for regular use is a Duofold Centennial, B nib. It is perfectly smooth, very reliable and writes like a dream.

To be quite honest - I do not have a single Parker that does not write well. Even the cheaper ones.

Even though I am a die hard 51 junkie that is a statement I can't agree with...

As far as the Parker line of pens....IMO, I would rate the Vacumatic and 51s at the very top of the line of vintage pens...

What determines which is best for you would be whether you prefer an open or a hooded nib.... both pens are superb writers if they have been properly restored.

I have a "51" in aerometric and a vacumatic filler. I also have a Parker Duofold Senior and modern Sonnet. I prefer the vacumatic "51" and the Sonnet. It really boils down to what you enjoy and is comfortable to hold.

Their best is easily the modern Duofold Centennial. I have 3 (and a couple of internationals which are smaller) and my favourite Centennial is the Amber with Broad nib, then the Pearl

My favorites in kinda order would be mid to late Duofold, Vacumatic, Striped Duofold and then "51".

With a nod to the 51 as a favorite of many FPNers, I have the 100, a Pearl/Black Duofold Centennial, Jade Duofold International all super writers with no issues. Also have many Jotters which are the ballpoint benchmark. Have to line up with earlier post that most, if not all Parkers are terrific pens.

May you and those you love, be always blessed with peace and never ending joy.

It kind of depends on what your definition of "general writing" is. If you are at all artsy, try a duofold or vacumatic for the nib flexibility. If you want a consistent line, cleanliness and minimal upkeep, get a P51.

Or, get both kinds, try them out, and sell the one you don't like.

Or start a collection...
