Help Me Find A Cheap One

Hi All,

I have some nice fountain pens (for example the Sailor full size 1911). I love the flow on that pen, but its a bit expensive to have a couple of those on hand. I have been using the Lamy Safaris for my "cheap" pen. The Safari is comfortable, but it isn't what I would call a super star writer. When drawing fast it sputters a lot and stops and starts no matter what ink I use (even lamy).

I have tried the Platinum Preppy, and love the way it writes (doesn't sputter like the Lamy even with the same ink), but it isn't at all durable.

What is everyone's favorite, cheap, fantastic writing, durable, comfortable to hold pen????!?!??!?!

I recently bought the im premium and I was surprised of the high quality construction and writing for this price range. But be carefull if you finaly choose this pen make sure that you buy the premium and not just the im model

Platinum has a "fancy" version of the preppy called the Plaisir its ~$20, but its got a metal body. I also like the Online Vision pens, they take short international carts, and are great writers, but they are in the $40-$50 range.

I prefer the Lamy Al-stars over the Safaris. I also really enjoy writing with my Faber-Castell Ambition (M nib)

I agree with the Parker 45 suggestion. The medium gold nib on the 45 is a joy to write with and you can get them in the flighter version at a reasonable price. In my opinion the Parker 45 is an underrated pen.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but you might want to consider a Hero 100. Mine is very reliable and very durable too. Can be found on eBay or at isellpens.com.

Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.

Thanks for all of the good info. I am looking for a pen I can buy a few cheaply. I think I'm going to start with the Parkers mentioned, and the Plaisir.

I tend to sketch illustrations out when I am talking to people and I use a Safari with a wet ink and a Fine nib for that without problems. This requires me to write quickly and make quick strokes when sketching diagrams out.

Another pen that I am using for this is a Pilot 78g F nib coupled with Noodler's Heart of Darkness which gives me lots of lubrication and smoothness. The nib was smoothened but it was still slightly scratchy until I switched to HoD ink.

The 78G pens are cheap and you can keep a bunch of them loaded with different colours and both F and M nibs.

I've ordered a couple of Pilot 78G fountain pens with an M and an F nib for $7.45 each.

That's less than what I pay for my ballpoint pens.
