Leather Pen Cases - Vegetable Tanned Vs. Chrome Tanned?

Hello everyone... I know this is an old topic but I was wondering if anyone had experience with Montblanc's 4810 Westside Pen Pouch? On their website, they do indicate they're chrome-tanned dyed through so that does worry me a bit. I have both Cartier's Diabolo Platinum Pinstripe B allpoint & Fountain pens so would this Montblanc case tarnish them? Many thanks ahead.

I have a couple of MB cases. It does not seem to tarnish my MB Sterling Silver pens. But I heard it is not good to keep your pens store in your chrome tanned leather cases.

That's why I am seeking a GVFC leather pen case that would fit my Sterling Silver pens.

The leather used for the Collection has been tanned using a specially gentle and environmentally compatible process. One remarkable advantage of this leather is that it does not encourage tarnishing of silver writing implements. Only a few tanneries are able to produce such leather.

Apologies for the unsolicited advice. I've been on the hunt for affordable leather cases for pens. No affiliation to them, just a very satisfied customer.

I recently bought two from LepusLeather (Konrad) a Poland based seller on Esty that are excellent quality. Couldn't be happier with the leather, the stitching, the finish, responsiveness and the price. He's willing to work to customize it to fit your pens. I asked him to make the opening larger to accommodate a Platinum Izumo, and he did.

The debate about leather has been going on for years, and will no doubt continue. The case you see above is a well made case, It is made (not by me) from vegatable tanned leather. The way it is tanned makes it suitable to be molded when wet as you can see. As it dries out it will maintain the shape.

The other main type of leather is called chrome tanned and uses more chemicals to traet the leather, both types of leather are inert if the rinsing process has been carried out correctly. Chrome tanned leather looks like the MB case at the top of the page.

I have been making pen cases since 2013 and started a thread here with lots of detail.

Thanks for the head up, it certainly looks great.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.
