Another Try At Information On How To Insert Lead In Parker 51

I have a Parker 51 mechanical pencil but can't figure out how to insert lead in it. Pic is below. Also can't seem to remove cap. I am afraid to pull on the cap too hard. I did go to the "Dave's Mechanical Pencils" site as suggested but could not find information needed. Any help/information is appreciated.

I had the same concerns when I recently decided to carry a Parker 51 pencil as my everyday pencil. The caps are on there pretty good but will come off if you pull hard enough. Once the cap is off, pull the eraser off and drop in some lead for storage. I inserted a single piece through the writing tip.

How many pens do I need, is not the question.

What size lead does it use?

Okay. I got the lead in and it works great. I just happened to have some Retro 51 .9mm lead. I would like to replace the eraser. Any suggestions as to where erasers can be purchased for the 51? AND does anyone have a strategy for getting the old and hard eraser out? Thanks in advance. :)

I'm using .9 in mine also. As far as the eraser goes, just grab hold of it and pull it. It will come out of the pencil along with a metal band. The band has a split in it. Use something thin to slightly pry the band apart at the split and slide the eraser out of the band and replace it with whatever someone here recommends. I too would like to know what other erasers fit the band.

How many pens do I need, is not the question.

Standard Sheaffer "P" eraser. It is the 6mm diameter model, also fits the Sheaffer Targa and some of the Triumphs and Imperials, IIRC.

You insert the led from the writing tip. You pull the top off to get to the eraser.

No, you do not insert lead from the tip. That applies to the older twist type pencils. With this style of pencil, you remove the cap, then eraser, and drop several pieces of lead into the barrel, as stated in the attached Parker instructions.

You are correct if it is the push top version. I was referring to the twist versions.

Assuming the picture shown was of the actual pencil, then the picture shows the nose cone which clearly belongs to the push top version.

Lead length is important with the clutch pencils. Most "modern" leads are usually the longer lengths, and not the shorter 1.75 inch length leads from the Parker 51 era. I know that Autopoint still makes a lead in this length, but most of the leads readily available in office supply stores are the 60mm/2.375 inch length.

Even if it's a cap actuated clutch pencil, I think the better practice is to feed through the nose, for the simple reason that over the years, debris builds up inside the mechanisms and causes jams. Feeding from the rear only exacerbates whatever clogging may be present. Nothing like trying to get six leads out of a jammed pencil.

Recently, I received a Parker 51 pencil ( photo attached ) but am unsure of how to refill the lead. Also, I was wondering if this one has any provision to hold an eraser as I have come across few similar pencils with an eraser fitted in the brass housing inside the cap. Any information regarding the query will be quite helpful. post-143346-0-89960000-1527544529_thumb.jpegpost-143346-0-93562100-1527544555_thumb.jpeg

That's the cap-activated P-51, a later version sold with the aerometric 51.

Uses .9mm leads, Press from the back. You will see little grippers extend. slide the new lead in and all the way down. Afterward, press down the same way to extend the lead.

Eraser fits under the cap. As Tom "Old Griz" Mullane said, a Sheaffer eraser works. Unfortunately, Sheaffer stopped marketing that model eraser a couple of years ago, but you might find some on EBay or in one of those stationers that refuses to throw away anything, no matter how old.

The erasers from a Bic disposable pencil are the right size, too.

Thanks but can't figure out where will the eraser fit. There is no slot for it under the cap as the jewel clip screw goes directly into the brass barrel under the cap. Unlike other Parker 51 pencil the cap can't be pulled off to access the eraser since the clip is screwed into the brass barrel.
