Really Really Heavy Pens (that Don't Cost Too Much)

Rotring 600 is heavy but I think it would be hard to find for less than $70 same with Sheaffer Legacy.

Also I wouldn't class a Pelikan 215 as a heavy pen. It's about the same weight as an Al-star.

But to jump on the jinhao bandwagon, 450 is a brick of a pen and it's even comes with a spade of a nib.

Some of the retro 51's can be very heavy so they might be worth a look.

The above is MY opinion. Would you expect it to be from someone else?

You might consider a Conklin Herringbone. It's a really heavy pen, but very attractive w/its lacquered guilloche cap & barrel. Priced around $70, I think.

It's only an addiction if you try to stop.

Hero Glorious 100, though much of the weight is in the cap (it is heavy without it though)

How much is too much?

The Cross Apogee is a really heavy pen and reasonably priced - IMO.

Good luck and I hope you get what you want.

Fountain pens aren't a collection, it's an insatiable obsession!

The regal cambridge. i think it's my heaviest useable pen. don't look at the cheap price, the nib is really really awesome. The heaviest pen that i have is also by regal, i can't find it but it has a world map all over the body. it's so heavy that i haven't used it yet. Another heavy pen in my collection is the Franklin Christoph Model 14. It has a nice heft to it but it's perfectly useable. The nib is in my top 3 list.

The Elizabeth is 65grams, so a bit heavier than the Cambridge. They can be very nice, if you can get a good one. The one with the World map is the Oxford. I was trying to get one in the reddish plastic resin, but they no longer seem to be available. It is the same weight as the Elizabeth.

+1 for JinHao pens, their bodies being made of pure brass.

Mine was $12 on eBay, with free shipping thrown in. They write great too. And the designs... these pens are very eye-catching.

They are indeed. They're not absurdly heavy, but they're quite... solid? They're also even nicer than they look in the (nice as they are) photographs. When I pulled the box out of my mailbox, the first thing I thought was "Wait, I thought this was the box of pens, but it's way too heavy"!

The new-old TWSBI is also all-metal, but I've yet to try one. (...and, like the Danitrio model noted above, with a Schmidt nib.)

Jinhaos can be pretty heavy in my experience.

I was just thinking that - I have a Jinhao commemorative edition and I wouldn't want to drop it on my foot by mistake, unless I was wearing steel toecaps. Inexpensive, too, even including shipping from Hong Kong.

..and a beautiful smooth writer.

In fact I was just about to click on "buy" on a Jinhao as a graduation present for my son (he likes the weight and smoothness of my Commemorative Fountain Pen for Zhuge Liang which weighs in at about 60g) until we saw that it weighed in at 100g - we're um'ing and er'ing now over whether this may be TOO heavy.

Another =1 on the Jinhaos. Lovely smooth nibs as well (apart from the 325 I've just got hold of, which is still a much better P51 knock off than any Heroes I've used...)

Could you get a Parker 100 for less than seventy dollars? Very heavy, solid pen, even if it might be a bit too big for some hands.

Waterman makes some pens with heft, albeit not the heaviest known to man, like the Laureate and the Expert II that you can get for <$70 on eBay.

I love the way the Regals write, but all three that I own have leaky converters--the Regal converter doesn't seat firmly. So I'm refilling cartridges, which so far work fine.

I do not have problems with the converters at all. I love the way they write. I have a peculiar problem with the Elizabeth. Herbin 1670 does not come out the right color, and I have done enough experiments to suspect some quality of the pen is to blame. Do you have the dark green converters, with the Regal name on?

+1 Jinhao

+1 on checking for them on eBay

With 55 Jinhao's in my collection I can vouch for the fact that they are indeed the heaviest pens that I have, as has been stated before they are made of solid brass which should tell you that they will be heavy however they are great writers and the commemorative ones especially can be the heaviest of them all. I buy all of mine from ebayer gotoschool88 a very reliable seller with good after sales service and in many cases free shipping and very affordable prices. Do yourself a favor and Buy some you will be pleasantly surprised by their performance and quality. Bryan

Specifically, 57g uninked (but with convertor installed).

The new/old TWSBI that I mentioned above, by comparison, and which I'd also thought felt pretty solid, is only 32g inked.

I also like them heavy, but I'm not sure I'd want much heavier than the Danitrio! (My other metal pens are also in the 30g range.)

The Hero Lisseur is a big, fat and heavy pen. The balance is decent for a heavy pen if you write with it unposted. It becomes quite unbalanced once it is posted.

The nib is decent, but it can really sing if you know how to adjust the nib's flow and also smooth it a little. I have Lamy Black ink in it right now and since adjustment, it has become a wet and smooth pen.

I find that the weight isn't a deterrent and it is good enough for longer writing sessions especially if you are the sort that likes heavy pens. Personally I alternate between lightweight pens like the Lamy 2000 and heavier metal pens. The key criteria for me is that the pens need to be well balanced.

Todd who frequents these forums sells chinese pens including Jinhao at isellpens.com.

I've found him prompt in his responses and very helpful.

If you are comparing his prices with ebay sellers in China, don't forget to take postage into account.
