Really Really Heavy Pens (that Don't Cost Too Much)

I have a number of large pens (Laban Mento's, Levenger Plumpster etc.) and I really like them

However, I would like to try some really heavy pens (not a top heavy pen, that's just annoying (like the posted plumpster))

Any models I should look into??

The regal cambridge. i think it's my heaviest useable pen. don't look at the cheap price, the nib is really really awesome. The heaviest pen that i have is also by regal, i can't find it but it has a world map all over the body. it's so heavy that i haven't used it yet. Another heavy pen in my collection is the Franklin Christoph Model 14. It has a nice heft to it but it's perfectly useable. The nib is in my top 3 list.

Please check out my blogshop for fountain pens and inks at http://inkoholicanonymous.blogspot.com/ Reviews of my pens can be found there too!

What about any brass over lacquer pen especially those from Chinese brands like Kaigelu and Duke?

I think of my FPs as my children.

The Waterman Philieas has a brass barrel and cap. And you can get them for less than $70 US. Is that heavy enough? I have no idea how they compare to the other pens mentioned above. I tried one of the Paradise Pen Company store brand pens and it was really heavy. And I think they are made by Franklin-Cristoph. Brian Gray of Edison Pens says that Scott Franklin makes good pens. I don't think Mr Gray gives out recommendations lightly. But the Paradise Pen may be too expensive.

For a really heavy pen, I'd recommend the Rotring Initial which can still be found (e.g. on eBay) for less than €30.

Jinhaos can be pretty heavy in my experience.

I was just thinking that - I have a Jinhao commemorative edition and I wouldn't want to drop it on my foot by mistake, unless I was wearing steel toecaps. Inexpensive, too, even including shipping from Hong Kong.

I just recently bought a NOS Pentel Excalibur, and it's quite heavy. Heaviest pen I own by far. It's heavy, but also thin and well balanced.

I also prefer large pens (not necessarily heavy), and I recently got a Jinhao X530 off of ebay. I think it's the same pen on which they base the Confucius commemorative (there's an entry on it in the FPN review section), but mine is painted with colorful streaks instead of the engraving.

I have two other Jinhaos (both X750, also heavy and big, but not like this) and I believe this has the same nib. They are very nice writing nibs, smooth even upside down.

The price I paid was 99 cents. Yes, 99 cents. With shipping to Asia it totaled about 8 or 9 dollars. Extremely good deal.

The Parker IM is a pretty heavy pen; too heavy for my taste, but it sounds like it would fit what you're looking for. It's also- for a Parker- a not very expensive pen; something well within your defined budget.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
