Hello all,

I need your help. I'm interested in ordering a pilot capless DECIMO with Fine nib. my main concern is will it be smooth or toothy.

the most important issue for me is the smoothines of the writing and a relative thin (apprx 0.5mm) lines. I write rather fast and small. now, i was reading some of the posts published in the forums and couldn't come to unique conclusion. should i order a Medium or Fine nib. please help. G.

I own the Decimo, Fermo and Vanishing Points and I have both Medium and Fine Nibs. I find the Medium Nib is very smooth and quite "fine". The Fine Nib is a bit scratchy for me and extremely fine.

I purchased my Decimo from Fahrney's Pen Store online - it was only $106 for Red colored body. It is one of my favorite pens out of my 35 + fountain pens. It is very light, without being too light, smooth and the clip is not a hinderence for my fingers. Clearly, your individual hand characteristics will affect your decision.

It's too bad you can't try these out. I have both a fine and a medium nib for my VP, both from richardspens.com. The fine is a normal Japanese fine size, and is plenty smooth. Pilot's nibs are fantastic.

The medium is also smooth, but MUCH bigger than the fine. Mine writes a much thicker line than 0.5mm. Since VPs are often wet writers, I'd take that into account when choosing. Again, they're not all alike so it's better if you can try before you buy.

Unfortunately i'm in a region were the DECIMO's are out of reach, so i'm counting on your suggestions before i order online.

i would appreciate more actual users to give their point of view. thanks.

I have a Pilot decmo in fine. And it writes a nice thin line equivalent to a Western EF.

The thing with the Pilot nibs is that the Decimo uses the same nib unit as the normal sized VP.

However, the clip placement and ergonomics are such that I would recommend trying before buying ... as others have suggested. It is not my first choice of pen. The convertor does not take much ink and is a bit finicky ... whereas the Pilot carts are great but proprietary in size so you're limited to using Pilot. The nib is smooth, yes. But has a narrow sweet spot so unless you are used to (or naturally) hold it right, you may find yourself dissatisfied if you rotate the nib inadvertently. A VP is not toothy - if it is, send it back.

Nice pen, nice finish and good jotter. However, I'll unlikely buy another and it's rarely inked for more than a week before I choose something else...

I'd buy the fine although new nib units are not that expensive should you wish to buy another.

In Rotation: Parker DuoFold Centennial / Duofold / GvFC

In storage: Too many to name.

I recently purchased another Decimo and ordered a Fine nib (from jetpens.com). It wrote drier than the Fine nib that I purchased several years ago with my Sesenta LE. The Sesenta LE is essentially a Decimo but in the tortoise colour; I purchased the Sesenta LE from Richard Binder, and he had tuned the Fine nib to my liking.

The Fine nib in my new Decimo was smooth, out of the box - but as noted above, it wrote a bit dry. A friend had sent me some brass sheets (brass sheets all the way from Italy), and I used the 0.5mm brass sheet to floss the Fine nib. The nib now writes just as I like. Again, the Decimo Fine nib wrote smooth; the brass sheet just helped to increase the flow to my personal preference.

By the way, I also have a Decimo pen with Medium nib. The line is too thick for me; in my opinion, it writes more like a Western Medium nib (versus a European Fine, as one might expect). As someone has already noted, the Decimo Fine nib is about the width of Western Extra Fine nib.

Hope that helps.

Talking about fountain pens is like dancing about architecture.

My Decimo F nib wrote perfectly out of the box. It is comparable in line width to a Western EF nib. Some of the wetter inks make the lines just a little bit thicker but nothing I would be concerned about. The Decimo remains one of my daily go-to pens and I highly recommend it.

Just say your post. I love the Decimo. I have all three VP from Pilot - love them all. I have both Medium and Fine nibs. I tend to like more fine nibs, but the Medium is very narrow - almost perfect. Fine is too narrow for me.

The decimo is light weight, but feels great. One of my favorite pens. You will love it - if you can find it.
