Sealing Wax Seals From Leather Stamps

Recommended Posts

Physicsgirl came up with a great way to get wonderful wax seals inexpensively so I wanted to get the word out. (Thank you Physicsgirl!) Leather stamps make great wax seals. Tandy Leather (click here for Tandy link) is once source for these although there may be others. Here's my favorite seal so far. I put a wood handle from the craft store on it which cost an extra 70¢. The metal handles that Tandy sells don't seem to fit very tightly so I don't recommend them.

P.S. - Goulet Pens carries Herbin Supple sealing wax one of the waxes that can go through the mail.

Nice! Thank you JBB and Physicsgirl! How big is the seal imprint on this one? Something like 3/4 of an inch on each side?

I keep coming back to my Esterbrooks.

Wow, those seals look very crisp. Thank you JBB. One more question. Does the wooden handle (which I'm guessing is generally available at crafts stores) simply press fit into the leather stamp's top?

The wooden handles I used were Shaker Pegs 2-7/16" --item #10023 - Lara's Crafts www.laracrafts.com. They were a tiny bit big.

The seals are big: 1" x 1-1/8". Here's another one.

Hmmm didn't we have a handy thread about strange things we use for our obsession hobby from the hardware store or from around the house? I'm going to try to search it out and link this post in it. Maybe we should ask about a sticky for it.

Here's the dragon seal. I'm having trouble getting a good impression. The size of these seals makes it a bit of a challenge.

Wow I didn't see the dragon one! I will have to go back and look some more. Do you swirl your ink in a circle before you put your seal down? It helps me judge if I have enough wax down.

Thanks, I'll try swirling the wax. For some reason I don't have good wax sealing technique.

Yay! I love the dragon! It really pops out in the gold-colored one.

Does anyone know where one can have custom seals made?

I would like a seal with my initials on it.

Many thanks,

M.

This has come up a lot. There are several places that will do simple monogram seals. Nostalgic Impressions, LetterSeals, Wax-Stamps, etc., and the seals are generally laser engraved. You can also get premade single initial seals from these place and others including Goulet Pens, and even craft and art stores like Michaels.

If you want to put out the real bucks, though, no one - in my opinion - beats the hand engraved seals and signets from Dexter Rings and Signets. None can compare.

Do a search at the top of this forum and at the top of the Paper and Pen Parafernalia Reviews forum for "wax seals" and you will be rewarded with several threads that will have more suggestions.

Welcome to the madness.
