Mont Blanc 146 Clip

Hi folks

through a somewhat unfortunately purchase here on FPN I have ended up with a 146 that someone in the past has attacked with abrasives to remove what appears to have been an engraving on the clip... this has obviously left the clip largely without the gold plating with the associated micro-scratching, and a slight removal of the start of the raised design section of the clip that starts halfway and extends to the top of the clip.

what I am after is a replacement clip and information of how to remove the existing one... is it held on by the blind cap like Pelikans are or is the blind cap held in place by a screw accessed from inside the cap... or some other methods??

any assistance in this matter would be appreciated as the pen was bought for my wife and is not the nicest in this condition.

cheers and many thanks

Trevor

Depending on whewther this was a modern pen, the clip may be attached by a screw on the inside of the cap.

If you shine a torch into the cap and there is a flat-headed screw (standard screwdriver), unscrewing that will let you remove the clip and the top dome of the cap allowing for clip replacement.

I'm not sure where you'll find a replacement clip but you could try the usual MB pen repairers (Eric Niksche, Tom W, Maxpens.de)

maybe I will post in the WTB section and see if I can catch those guys or anyone else... as the only decent ebay price the seller does not sell internationally and isn't set up to answer questions which is weird

now where did I leave that torch rolleyes.gif

I believe Montblanc has a service where they will restore almost any MB pen you bring them (for a hefty fee, of course). If you like the pen and intend on keeping it perhaps you should make the investment and contact MB customer service. I think they completely overhaul the pen and repair & polish everthing.

the pen had "apparently" been to MB just prior to sale where they "completely overhaul[ed] the pen and repair[ed] & polish[ed] everything" but either that was not the case or MB did a crappy job as the blind cap has scratches on it lining up with the clip which were obviously done when sanding the clip gaah.gifwallbash.gif

Have you proof it was sent to MB? Service form should say what was done.

nah... only going by what the seller told me... and he seems to be a pretty honest FPN'er... all I was told on a couple of occasions was that it had a service and polish

Hmm...

MontBlanc from what I've heard don't do 'rubbish polishes"...

When they service a pen, it's polished and restored looking like new... else they replace parts so it looks like new.

A bit like if you were to send a Tiffany ring in for a polish or resize, it comes back like the day you purchased it. I would suggest asking for the service quote/form as well. Or was the service sent to someone other than MB?

mmm... will have to ask if I could possibly see the service note, for if that is the case that MB do a "return-to-new" service and this one did in fact go to MB then something went wrong in the service department as I could very easily have done a better job myself...

as I said to the seller on receiving the pen and not being particularly happy with the condition, that if it did go to MB he wasted his money...

@tanalasta... do you know how much MB charge for a service here in Oz? (totally new to MBsembarrassed_smile.gif)

Not necessarily; I recently took a 149 to a service centre which had a broken piston spindle. It also had some marks on the cap which I asked the serivce centre to see if they could rectify. It came back with the marks still there, although I got a new spindle, piston, barrel, feed and feeder case plus nib aligned all for their flat repair fee (£54 in the UK at present). They weren't deep gouges or anything, so I took it home and polished out the marks myself.

I would take the view that they do everything to make you pen structurally perfect again, but not costmetically. It's just that their policy of replacing faulty parts rather than renovating makes repaired pens look perfect as well.

I stand corrected...

Apologies, I remember asking re: pricing once and was told by my dealer it varied between pens and what needed to be done. I don't know if that's necessarily correct. I do remember pricing was several hundred ... and significantly more expensive than the US counterparts.

I suggest asking MontBlanc or PM'ing one of the Australian MB collectors (e.g. Sunnerd)
