My wife has a Parker I.M. Fountain pen, and she asked me what the I.M. stood for. After searching here, googling online, and looking at ParkerPens.net (I thought sure I'd find the answer there), I was stuck.

I'm a man, so I was loathe to ask.

But now, here I am! So... what does I.M. mean?

Is it possibly Italic Medium? What type of nib does it have?

It has a medium nib. It actually writes smoothly, with no skipping-- a nice pen for the price.

I.M. is the model name.

I see. Where are the letters I.M. written and what do they look like?

Mine's made in UK, so it's not Indochinese Made for sure. I was thinking along the lines of "I am", an expression of who you are, since the pen name is "Profile" after all. (Full name is Parker IM Profile)

Based on my own experience with it-- "It's Moderatelygood". I had understood that either IM or Profile might be used depending on what market one lived in.

Interesting. When I access the Parker website from the U.S. it doesn't mention the Profile name at all. I wonder if one sees a different page from the U.K. or internationally.

Sounds believable-- is that really what it stands for? I think I'm going to have to write a letter to Parker Pen and ask!

Greetings all,

You'll be pleased to know that I.M. stands for "Instant Modern." Check out their print catalog- it's alluded to there.

BTW, any IM owners out there want to tell me what they think of theirs? I'm toying with the idea of buying one, (either an IM or a 45).

All the best,

Sean :)

That's almost as silly as my guess earlier in the thread. Mine is of the previous body pattern, and it's not bad-- I'd rate it as somewhat better than a poor, late example of 45 and very similar in performance to a 25. Nothing to stir the heart, but reliable and smooth.

The IM shares the nib/collector unit with the Vector and the Jotter. Not the highest standard in the world in my opinion. Out of five of these pens, only a couple wrote well. The others were skippers and hard starters.

My impression was "mediocre". The Flighter version I handled was very heavy; the barrel is a huge hunk of machined brass which I wouldn't want to write with for long. The business end is just a Vector nib, so the writing quality wasn't spectacular either.

I'd give it a miss. Grab a S/S Frontier instead. :)
