Best Chinese Pen Options

My choice Chinese pens in my present rotation are:

1) The Jinhao x450 and x750 with Jowo nibs, which make the pen write better than $100+ pens in side by side comparisons. I have a Franklin-Christoph nib in one of them and it is heaven :happycloud9: .

2) I also am really liking the Wing Sung 3008. I like the 698 since it is built a little better, but the 3008 feels more comfortable for me, I haven't had any problems with it, and the price is amazing on Ebay for what I have gotten out of it.

I also ordered a Wing sung 3003 since I am a Pilot Prera fan who wishes it was longer :glare:.

I also ordered a Wing sung 6359, which I heard comes with a great EF nib. I stumbled upon it because I was looking for a Lamy Safari Knock off since the nib on my Jinhao 599 wasn't working for me.

3) Oh... and of course... The Hero 616. I don't know why... but I love these pens especially when I tune the nib a little bit. Put some wet/lubricated ink in there and it is a trustworthy beat-around pen... if it's not a dud.

So true...too bad all three I got were duds! The nibs do write great and decently wet, but my pens all had sealing problems in the section so the pens would randomly vomit blobs of ink out on the paper (or clothing, etc).

Got you. That's a shame, as those nibs are a big part of the Jinhao's attraction. Not a problem I've had myself, but it would be a very annoying one indeed.

Is the 992 the pen that's like a plastic x450?

I have over the years had dozens of Jinhao pens and nearly all of them have fab nibs ,if not you are unlucky and to solve the problem either draw figure eights with a slightly abrasive nib or buy another nib from one of the many suppliers, it wont cost much to do that,or buy another Jinhao for a few dollars.Trust Me, oneill

Ugh, that's a heartbreak! It's not worth the stains. They are a gamble. I'll admit I had a pack of 3 and 1 was a dud. I bought from a few vendors, tried to be careful, but the rest have yet to arrive so I can't say much about how effective my efforts have been beyond luck.

I hope you get a good pack of them if there is a next time. You put some micromesh 12000 to a proper and aligned 616 very slowly, gently, and carefully and you'll hit the mark where you got one heck of a pen.

5 Parker 51s later I'm cured of my need for more hooded nibs. =P

The 992 is much smaller, lighter and more torpedo cigar shaped than the x450.

And, unfortunately, fragile

lol you set that one up for the kicker. P51's are definitely somethings to be excited about. I like the weight of them a lot and how they are a great all-rounder.

I definitely like the idea of having a solid P51.

I also really like the idea of having a 616 around to give out to anyone interested. I always keep a good stock of 616's for that, and thanks to Wing Sung's new influx of affordable and competent pens I have a nice variety to give away (6359, 3008, 3003) on top of that. Get 'em hooked you know? lol I like to corrupt people's ordinary as often as I can and spark up some ink with them. Those gateway pens lol. That creative intellect can get pretty addictive for some, man lol.

There are so many Wing Sung models out now, that I don't know which to choose.

If you didn't want a hooded nib or piston filler and could only get one Wing Sung, which would you choose?

Oh jeez, you're basically ruling out the big players: 618, the near and dear 698, and my Favs for now the 3008. I like these because they have a descent weight to them as well. There's the:

1) 6359 I got the ordered from china-Ebay, but I heard that Lamy replacement nibs fit loosely on the feed, so I don't know how swappable the nib is. But it seems well built with a descent weight. But it also has that Faceted section that is hit or miss. But since the body isn't as wide as on the Lamy safari, the step down at the top of the section might not be as drastic, which could work great for me, and I can always put a juicy ink in it to make the EF write broader if need be. I am quite curious about it. I do want to see how much I can tinker with it.

2)***I have the 3003 on they way from Ebay-china and it can have Metro nibs swapped in which I like the idea of, since I have a couple. But I have no idea how it feels in the hand. I like the inner liner of the cap if it functions the same as the Prera's to provide an air tight seal. I like the Prera A lot, but I am wondering how the 3003 pen feels uncapped.***I'd probably choose the 3003.

But as you know, the Jinhao 992 is really piquing my interest right now. I love the Jinhao x450's and x750's especially with Jowo nibs. I have Goulet nibs and Franklin Christoph nibs in them and when I have tried other $100+ pens in a side by side comparison I would either not buy them or return them because they didn't write any better nor feel any better.

lolol So to answer your question : WS 3003 lol

How bout you?

+ 1 for Jinhao and Baoer! I have several and find them very reliable. Exceptional value for money.

I would endorse that, I have quite a few Jinhao and Baoer the same company,I find that they are the most affordable and reliable pens on the market, sometimes you will get one which does not perform like a Mont Blanc

but for the price any problems that they have are easily fixed for very little.Trust Me ,oneill

Thanks for your thoughts! I don't as yet own and Wing Sung pens, so I thought I might as get one.

And then... a couple minutes ago I discovered the Penbbs 266 and 308. They look just like the Jinhao 992 and Lingmo Lorelei but come in many more colors and have nice nibs.

If you want a Fountain Pen that will make your collection Stand Out then look for the Abalone 8802 which in my

opinion looks better than a Mont Blanc, this pen is sometimes called the Mother of Pearl pen

Jinhao uses both

names I know because I had the pleasure of Naming it,I also have the pleasure of owning 3 of

them. Trust Me,

I'm very curious about these.

I'm going to wait to hear some reviews and hopefully for Chrisrap52 on youtube to do some videos on them. There's nothing on them out there.

I wonder what kind of nibs those are and if they are interchangeable.

It does seem to be their most popular pen, I just don't like piston fillers because it takes too long between fills and I don't like sticking my pen in the bottle to fill. I also don't like the blocky TWSBI inspired design of the 698. There's a reason I sold one TWSBI while my other one collects dust.

well it's a piston filler, so you can control the amount of ink get sucked up.. and you dont have to fill the pen all the way full...

I like piston filler but i prefer eyedropper.. which is why I love my Ahab with a reloadable cartridge add on.. it's an eyedropper pen that dont burp..

in the future i would like to give vac filler a try..

anyway, if there is one wing sung pen to choose, go with 698.. and if you like it, maybe upgrade it with a pilot nib for a better writing experience if the original nib sucks..

I felt the TWSBI was blocky as well. It's uncomfortable for me because the angle of the section is a bit steep. On top of the that you have the added weight of the larger amount of ink and the piston mechanisms that make it bulky IMO compared to most pens I have used.

I see what you mean about piston fillers. It would be nice to see a non-hooded cartridge/converter pen about the size and substantialness of the 698 or 3008. I look forward to my Jinhao 992's, but I would like something with a little more size and strength to it like the 698. And, though I do like pens that do have hooded nibs, I much prefer a non-hooded nib since they're easier to orient and especially ones that use swappable nibs like those from Lamy, Jowo, or Pilot.

I feel like there's an added security with a Cart/Conv in case the barrel cracks or something, and it's simpler in my mind with less machinery to work around, and less components to possibly have problems with.

If you are using the cartridges in the Ahab, doesn't that make it into a cartridge pen rather than an eyedropper? 😛

The other thing I much prefer about cartridge/converter pens is that I can use a bulb syringe to blast any ink out of the section with minimal effort. It can be murderously hard to get some bulletproof inks completely out of a Pelikan!
