I was lucky enough to visit Henry when I was in London earlier this month. His collection is really something special. Here's a photo of me and him at the Portobello Market:

Now, could we have Mr Simpole to visit the Melbourne Pen Show this year and bring with him his delicious pens??? Huh Henry?? :notworthy1:

I would love a closer look at those cases, never mind the Simpole Overlays!!!

The overlays are fantastic! He handed me one of those and asked me my opinions of these kinds of pens. I said it was mainly for show and not everyday use, as I thought they would be heavy and unwieldly... and I was wrong! It felt light and very comfortable to write! :clap1:

 

Although sometime later in the day I wonder about the longevity of the overlays, since if I remember correctly, silver tend to oxidise, becoming black, especially when there is high humidity. I didn't get to ask him though.

A quick wipe with a silver cloth and it's shiny again. Plus, any tarnish tends to bring out the workmanship and give more dimension.

Well, being a student, a pen that costs £550 is not achievable now!

Although after hearing the price and thinking where to get the money, a single question pops up in my mind: "do you know why humans have two kidneys...?" :roflmho:

Ghost Plane............ I didn't say I didn't want the overlays too - I was just being polite - hehehe! I'm sure we could come to an arrangement over the contents of his little Alladin's Cave!!! :roflmho:

 

The best way to look after silver overlays is to use them!! Henry makes them to be used............why aren't we born with 100 arms???

Please excuse my ignorance and enlighten me as to whom owns &/or controls the spaces used by the vendors of Portobello Market. As far as I can tell the space and the rents are controlled by a local level of governance, the local Council. This suggests that primarily local considerations are influencing the rents and thus the vendors, which in turn effect the prices the vendors need to charge. Might I be so bold as to suggest that as Portobello Market is of value to those outside the local environs, that it's control should more appropriately fall to a larger body, perhaps one that coordinates the actions of local Councils. If such an organization does not exist, then I suggest that one be created, either formally, or informally.

It is fairly obvious from what has already been written here that there is a lot of interest, and great enthusiasm.

The hotel looks good, and the surrounding area looks really interesting, I will be going.

Nobody down there wanted to buy my collection yesterday. It's about 20 pens. I was surpised there must be one for every decade of the last 100 years. You'd have thought they'd be interested wouldn't you?

In my personal opinion, Portobello Road has been a tourist trap more than anything else for at least a decade or so. Most emporiums are pretty much like this:
