Best Black Waterproof Ink

Can anyone suggest a nice black waterproof ink for a new fountain pen user? The pen is in the mail and the next FP addict is anxiously searching the world for the best black wp ink. I assured him that I would have an answer to his question in the twinkling of an eye. so c'mon guys..help me out here!

I like Noodlers Black. Waterproof and great price for the quantity you get. Sometimes I will use a different ink if I need a better flow, since Noodlers Black does not flow as generously in some of my pens.

If you want black and truly waterproof, I think Noodler's is the only safe fountain pen choice. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there is no other ink that fits the question.

Hello Playpen,

 

As far as I know, only Noodlers offers TRULY waterproof inks. Here is a complete list of the known waterproof and water-resistant inks right here from the pages of the FPN, (just cruise through the list and pick out the blacks- but stay clear of the iron-gall inks- they're taboo- ).

Thank you all for the replies...looks as though my better half is going to be assigned the task of dropping in on the FPH to grab a bottle of the Noodler's. I do wish all ink could be waterproof. I so love all the colors out there but what a pain to be worrying about the premanence.....

there's also the polar black which is supposed to flow easier yet still have the same waterproof qualities of standard black. might be harder to find, though. whether it's worth looking for would depend on the pen the ink is going into since in my Waterman Expert II, the standard Noodler's black doesn't flow well enough (converter is too narrow). in my Pelikan M200 it would probably flow just fine since that pen seems to have a wider reservoir inside.

Another option, if flow is an issue, is Noodler's Swishmix Nile Ebony, sold exclusively by Chuck Swisher. Flows generously, dries quickly, and you won't find a blacker black. The downside is a slightly greater tendency to feather on some cheap paper. For the best of both worlds, I use a mix of Noodler's Black and Nile Ebony. Works great.

Why is Noodler's Black the hands-down favorite for waterproof black fountain pen ink? And what affects how generously it flows from this pen to that pen?

Noodler's Black tends to have excess ink smudge or come off. I will say Platinum Carbon Black is the best waterproof black.

I don't know why I fret over it, but I waffle between Noodler's Black, which from a wet Japanese EF is very tight and dark, and Sailor Kiwaguro, which goes down matte and has a very gentle, calming look. X-Feather showed some promise, but I never really loved HoD or Platinum Carbon Black.

I'm a massive Noodler's fan, however, I'm really loving using De Artementis Document Black at the moment.

It seems to want to wash away a little less than the Noodlers . . .

I like Noodlers black a lot but lately I've been using MB permanent black.

I like Sailor Nano Black and Platinum Carbon black. Compared to those two Noodler's Black isn't black.

I have Platinum Carbon Black, its really great, with wonderful qualities. And its really dong good against water as well, nail polish remover

The best waterproof black I've ever used was Private Reserve Invincible Black. It's lubricated, fast-drying, resistant to feathering or bleeding, and dries to a very dark matte black. It's definitely smoother on the page, faster drying, and more matte than Noodler's Black, and nearly as bleed-resistant.

 

However... PR changed the formula for some unstated reason, and the sample vial I got of the revised stuff would barely even work in my pens. They also have now introduced an "Invincible Black Fast Dry", which makes no sense to me as the original PRIB was one of the fastest drying inks around. IB Fast Dry is watery and very different from the original IB. So... I give up. I'm going to keep my remaining, precious, old-formula PRIB and use it until it's all gone, and then I shall weep and mourn. And I'll never buy anything from PR again, not only because they messed up Invincible Black, but also because I've had so many other varied problems with PR inks.

 

So... I guess I'm just taking the opportunity to vent a little, but of course Noodler's Black is perfectly fine for most purposes. It's one of the iconic inks of modern times.
