Best Brown?

I've been using MB Toffee in my 149/ F...ever since my g-f flushed the dregs of the Racing Green while I was in country. This ink is so cool, the shading is subtle and surprising ...on Claire. This is brown fluid at it's professional best. My other fav is Iroshizuku yama -guri...in a MB /M..... a sl. darker brown on Claire. Y-g doesn't exhibit as much shading on French paper.

I use two brown inks. Diamine Chocolate Brown is a dark brown that lives up to its name. And when I want a brown ink with beautiful shading, I use Herbin Café des Iles. I wrote a review here that includes both those inks.

I'm awed by the sheer number of replies guys- To clarify; I have used PR Chocolat Brown, but I'm going to stop because of how long it takes to dry. I use Copper Burst for editing and sketching; I like having it for editing because it looks "friendlier" than a lot of other choices. I have to say, Havana Brown and Cafe Des Iles look like the best contenders -- though MB Toffee brown has me very tempted. Thank you!

I have the MB Toffee Brown: beautiful plus shading! But absolutely NO water resistance!!

 

Waterman Havana: Nice rich brown.....love it in fine nibs. But....is it waterproof? Haven't tested it.

 

Iroshizuku Tsukushi (Horsetail) Another beautiful brown....haven't tested it for waterproof. Anyone?

 

Noodler's Walnut: I need to try this one....is it semi waterproof?

So, my bottle of PR Chocolat is down to its last dregs. What should I replace it with? I love the color, but wish it would dry faster. Also, I require non bulletproof ink for my notes....I have a tendency to make a mess.

I like Montblanc Toffee Brown.

 

I like Waterman Havana, too, but it strikes me as sort of a purplish-brown rather than a straight brown.

I really love Noodlers Golden Brown. Has excellent shading when used with broad nibs. And I really love the way Noodlers Kiowa Pecan looks with my fine nib Lamy Safari.

I like Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown too. Its the only locally available brown ink in Singapore also.

Me too! Montblanc Toffee Brown and Waterman Havana. Also De Atramentris Coffee Brown (scented), rich colour and real scent of coffee while you are writing...

I have Skrip Brown in a transparent 71JT ED. It looks like one of those relics that turn liquid every time the church roof needs repair.

 

Depending on the pen and the paper, this ink can vary from milk-chocolate to dark, and shade nicely with a flex or semi-flex.

I'm a big fan of Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown. Not sure of the waterfastness, but it resists hand oil smudges.

 

I also like Noodler's Polar Brown as well - which will probably replace the Pelikan as sometimes I leave my bag in the car during cold midwest winters. But man, I like the Pelikan Brown...

Wow, so many responses! ..., but has anyone tried stipula?

Hmm... not sure I understand but IMO Stipula has no brown. The closest thing they have -- or I have -- is their (Calamo) Sepia (Tierra di Siena) but that is much more a real sepia. A very subtle light brownish beige violet, only a tick of brown.

I find that Stipula's Dark Red (Borgogna) is even browner. Of course, redder, but still less violet, no beige, somehow a bigger tick browner.

What I in any case do love here is that these are all 70-ml bottles, neatly packed.

In the past, my ink choices have been various blacks, blues, and blue-blacks. For some reason, a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try another color. I chose PR Copper Burst. I'm in love! At the moment, I'm using it in my Lamy AL-Star Coffee FP w/EX nib. My other pens have Lamy Blue and Blue-Black and Aurora Black. The Copper Burst is my favorite. I just love the way it looks on white and ivory paper.

 

I have been thinking about trying the PR Chocolat next.

Diamine Saddle Brown to me exemplifies the color Brown, and it dries fast. It is my favorite brown, mainly because it looks...Brown!

I also like JH Cafe des Ilies and will like to try MB Toffee Brown eventually.

I am not a big fan of brown ink. Waterman Havana Browm and Mont Blanc Toffee are OK but look good only on ivory colored paper.

I really like noodler's FPN manuscript brown, and Kiowa pecan. They are pretty similar though.

thus far, I've ended up loving the color of Grand Canyon, but not the behavior. The color of Diamine Saddle, but not the behavior (too dry in my Lamy which is already a dry pen).

 

Sadly - Iroshizuku Tsukushi (Horsetail) worked perfectly in both pens. I wish it were ever so slighlty cooler (but it's cool enough without being grey/green) and a whole lot cheaper. However, the good thing is, I don't use brown ink much. It isn't as "reddish" as the scans on Jetpens indicates though (which is good) and is very close to the color of Diamine Saddle Brown. Visconti Brown is a very well-behaved, good flowing ink but darker than I wanted and ever so slightly redder than Tsukushi and Saddle - to my eye. That said, if you want a good flowing, pleasant warm brown that isn't too saturated but isn't anemic, I think Visconti Brown is excellent. It did very well in my Lamy (as did the Iroshizuku) and just in general impressed me as a quality ink.

 

I'm holding off on buying because I'm still recovering from the impact of falling in love with Ku-Jaku. Tsuki-yo is off in the future as well.

 

Diamine Chocolate is lovely if you want a nice, saturated brown that is neither too warm nor too cool. It flows well (I'm wondering if I need to "retry" Saddle to see if I mucked up the pen or something).
