Pilot Birdie Fountain Pen Review ...

As this thread has been bumped, I'd just like to say that my own Birdie has really grown on me over the eight years since I last posted. I still have it inked up lying on top of a pad on my bedside table for scribbled nocturnal notes, and it's the only pen I've kept consistently in use the whole time I've owned it apart from the obvious heavyweights (Lamy 2000, my first P51, Rotring 700). Lovely little thing.

Thanks for the update! What nib do you have on your Birdie? Also what inks do you find work best in it?

We're I to take the plunge, it would only be for the oblique nib.

It's not the oblique, I'm afraid. I got it with a standard Japanese medium nib, which is a perfect size for taking notes as it falls almost exactly halfway between a European medium and fine. I mostly just use Pilot cartridges in it. I know that some have complained that the ink isn't brilliant, but I've never had any problems with the black, and the cartridges hold a lot more than the convertor the pen came with.

I recently acquired a Birdie at an estate sale. Labeled as a Medium Nib. (Labeling was in English) The filling mechanism is a squeeze type and does not appear to be removable. It had been inked and required a bit of cleaning. My question is, can the filling mechanism be removed to allow the use of cartridges? I gave it a pull, a twist, and a bit of a wiggle, all gently with no success. I don't want to break it lol, it might become a EDC pen...

Thanks in advance.

Hi

The Birdie converter can be removed by just pulling out. Maybe dried ink could be the reason that you are not able to pull it out.

I could switch it with the converter from my Elite 95s and other Pilots and also use cartridges. I go for bottled ink as it is cheaper and no plastic waste produced by empty carts.

Regards
