Huon Pine Burl / African Blackwood

Silver Lake Woodworks

Recommended Posts

One of my favorite woods, this specimen was recovered from a tree that fell naturally over a hundred years ago. The Huon Pines are the second oldest organisms on Earth (next to the Bristlecone Pines) and only grow in a remote region of Tasmania. They are a protected species and live trees are prohibited from being harvested. They were used in the past for building boats, as their natural oils prevent the wood from rotting. I love the tiny knots and the fingerprint-like grow rings, with several hundred years of growth present in a single pen.

Thanks for looking!

Very good job on these pens. Someday, I wouldn't mind learning to turn some pens rolleyes.gif

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

I've only turned on HuonPine Pen for a customer(was a rollerball), and I came close to not letting it go. Was an amazing piece of wood(as is yours) with all the little 'eyes' staring back at me.

Great fit-n-finish! Someone will be proud to have this in their pocket.
