Century I Nib Loose/wobble

Recommended Posts

My Cross Century I's nib has become loose in the section. I believe that this is the problem that has been described by others. I have tried searching, but have been unable to come up with any posts detailing the solution to this problem. I am reluctant to send this pen off to Cross as I suspect I'll end up with a Chinese made Century II as a replacement. Is this something I can fix myself?

Kind regards,

You are correct. Others have noted the problem, and Cross will certainly replace it with a CCII.

Were I to have my CCI again, I would have first tried to insert a tiny o-ring into the space between feed and silver section ring. That may have stabilized the nib enough to extend its service life. If that failed, I would have tried to dissasemble the section and look for interior solutions. Better to try and fail than to have Cross ignore your request to return the pen.

Dear Russ,

Thank you for your reply. Any thoughts on how to disassemble the section without breaking anything?

Actually, as nice as those pens are, I would be inclined to send it off to Richard Binder or El Zorno for a proper permanent repair. That might even be a repair they could accomplish at a pen show. I'd surely message them an inquiry on it.

Those pens do come up on The Bay from time to time but the well presented, in nice shape ones I suspect will still bring more

than a proper repair to yours would.

I'm sure we can't be the only ones who are wondering how to repair this fault that seems to develop in some but not all Century fps. As some of us have ventured to do simply repairs and resorations following the help and advice here, any clues as to how to fix this problem would be great.

I had a Century Classic with a wobble and Cross replaced the nib unit even though, perversely, I would not have worried about replacing the pen as it had no value other than being perfectly functional, well apart from the wobble of course.

Someone recently posted about driving the nib / feed out of a CCII section. I believe a dowel (with a depressed center?) was used, moving the nib / feed out of the front. A close-up x-ray would be a fun and informative way to preview what's inside, if you had access to a machine.

I like the suggestion to contact a nibmeister. They certainly have more experience than most of us.

Let us know what happens!

I have posted the link on other threads too as this seems to be a common problem. I got my cross century classic nib section replaced for about $35 from Brothers Pen Company bpc@cyber.net.pk Pakistan. International shipping costs would apply too so you may need to rethink repairs here, but cross century Classic Nib sections are available (or were available till about a month ago) here.
