Pelikan released the "Blue Planet" pen in 2006 in a limited edition of 540 pens, after the estimated age of the earth, 540 million years. This pen is number 380/540. The cap and barrel of the pen are in cobalt blue. The barrel is overlaid with a sterling silver sleeve lacquered in black space dotted with gold stars, surrounding the earth itself, seen through white clouds with the blue oceans and the continents in gold, the "Blue Planet" seen from space. The cap and barrel jewels are gold plated sterling silver, engraved with the lines of longtitude and latitude. The clip is gold plated sterling, as is the cap band. The nib is M1000 size, 18k gold with rhodium highlights.

Size: closed the Blue Planet is 5 7/8 inches (14.9cm), slightly longer than the M1000; with the cap posted the pen is 7inches (18cm). It is also heavier than an M1000 at 64g, comparted with 42g for an M1050 with a vermeil cap; this reflects the finer construction of this limited edition pen.

The pen comes in an impressive display case: the pen sits in a stylized globe within a blue Perspex cube.

Condition: the pen is mint, never inked nor dipped, has a broad nib and is complete with the display case, boxes and documentation.

The list price of the "Blue Planet" in 2006 was $2700. The pen is no longer available from Pelikan.

Infinite perfection

The earth hangs in space like a shining blue jewel. Oceans give off a deep blue shimmer, and the continents appear a gentle greenish brown. A very special tribute is now being paid to this spectacular view of our planet by the "Blue Planet" limited edition from Pelikan.

Life on earth has been unfolding in all its unimaginable variety for some 540 million years. The fountain pen highlights this figure, limiting the edition to just 540 instruments.Extraordinary materials combine with traditional craftsmanship to make Blue Planet yet another masterpiece produced under the Pelikan name.

This new star that has appeared in the universe of writing instruments emanates an almost ethereal elegance and a quality of the utmost preciousness. The cobalt blue front section is adorned with a gold-plated sterling silver ring. The sterling silver sleeve is engraved with a detailed depiction of the earth with its oceans of shining blue, standing out against the anthracite black background of outerspace. The filigree pattern of clouds above the earth is embedded into the protective layer of clear varnish, and is applied with the finest air brushtechnique. The overall impression is harmoniously complemented by guilloched lines of longitude and latitude on the filling knob and the tip of the cap. And of course the 18-carat gold nib, written in by hand and adorned with elegantly curving rhodium embellishments, shines spectacularly.

Available in the nib widths: F, M, B

The case

This noble writing instrument is presented in an exclusive radiantly blue cube symbolizing the infinite expanse of space. Inside it, the fountain pen is embedded in a stylized globe. Each writing instrument of this edition is individually numbered.
